Profile

As Editorial Director, Laura oversees editorial direction, writing and editing for Montclair State University Communications & Marketing's print and online publications, including its award-winning Montclair magazine.

In more than two decades as a news reporter, writer and editor, Laura has told the stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, often in response to extreme events from earthquakes to hurricanes to terrorism. Her work at The Dallas Morning News, St. Petersburg Times (now The Tampa Bay Times) and Florida Times-Union earned statewide and national awards, including from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Press Managing Editors, the Texas Governor’s Commission on Women, the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, and the DFW Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. Her writing was nominated by her editors in Florida and Texas for the Pulitzer prize.

As a freelancer, Laura's stories appeared in The New York Times, USA Today Magazine, CNBC online and in the anthology "Jewish Sages of Today." While freelancing, she also taught magazine writing and production and public affairs reporting as an adjunct professor at the University of North Texas, her alma mater. She also taught public relations writing at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and worked for two years in New York City as an administrator for the South Asian Journalists Association, helping run its scholarship program, journalism conference and job fair.

She began working at Montclair State in 2012, after a stint as an editor at AOL's hyper-local news organization Patch.
