How to Raise a GPA

What is a GPA?

A term GPA is the average of your grades from any one semester.A cumulative GPA is an average of your grades calculated from all classes you've taken at Montclair State University.

Should I repeat the course(s) in which I received a D or an F?

Yes. If, for example, you receive an F the first time you take a course and if you repeat the course and receive an A, only the higher of the two grades is included in your GPA. In other words, the new grade replaces the old.

Should I take a lighter course load?

Yes. Most students who are working to raise their cumulative GPA find taking a lighter course load leads directly to more time to study. To encourage the lighter course load and its benefit of more study time, Montclair State requires the students who are working to raise their their GPAs because of academic action to register for no more than 12 credits - until good academic standing is reached.

Can my advisor provide assistance?

Yes. Your advisor can help you to formulate strategies that lead to academic success. Please keep in mind, however, that students are responsible for implementing strategies devised with an advisor. Among other things, this will mean completing course requirements as described by professors in class syllabi.

Does Montclair State offer GPA-related support services?

Yes. The Student Academic Success Program is an excellent resource which many students have used for this.
