Former
Acting Gov. Richard J. Cody visits MSU
Last week, Montclair State
hosted a conference examining service-learning in New Jersey
and addressing ways to engage even more students and
organizations in this growing educational movement. Former
acting governor, Richard J. Cody, who signed a bill
launching a pilot program to require 15 hours of community
service in 30 New Jersey high schools, discussed the
significance of that initiative and prospects for expanding
it statewide.
An estimated 14,000 New Jersey
elementary, high school and college students participate in
service-learning, a teaching and learning strategy that
integrates classroom instruction with hands-on community
service.

MSU
Men's Soccer Finishes Record Season
The Red Hawks earned a
20-1 record this year, the first 20-win season in school
history, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time
since 1998. Montclair State cruised through the competition in
the New Jersey Athletic Conference with a perfect 9-0-0 record,
the first time since 1971 the Red Hawks did not record a loss or
tie in league action, and captured the NJAC tournament title for
the first time since 1989. Head Coach Brian Sentowski was named
the conference's Coach of the Year. The
Red Hawks were eliminated from the NCAA
Division III Sectional Tournament by Dominican (IL) in penalty
kicks, 4-2. The shootout came after a 1-1 tie in regulation and
two overtime periods.

Reunion Plans
Underway
Check
your mailboxes! Your Alumni Relations staff is hard at work
reaching out to the Classes of 1957 and 1982 who will be
celebrating their 50th and 25th anniversaries, respectively. We
are in the process of planning events honoring these special
occasions and look forward to your input. If you have any
questions or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to us at
alumni@mail.montclair.edu. Be sure to put "reunion" in the
subject line.
Starting at the Beginning
In an effort to engage students and get them
thinking about being an alumnus/a long before they graduate,
plans are underway to establish a student-alumni group on
campus. In its early developmental phase, the mission of the
organization will be to work to uphold traditions, encourage MSU
spirit and pride, foster bonds between current students and
alumni and promote future alumni involvement through outreach
activities. Students will benefit from networking with alumni,
developing leadership skills, increasing their campus
involvement, hosting events and more. If you participated in the
Student Alumni Council during its brief period on campus and
would like to send us thoughts and feedback on your experience,
please contact Jennifer Fusco,
fuscoj@mail.montclair.edu.
Tell us
your Centennial Story
Thank you to all those alumni who contributed
ideas for the Centennial theme. President Susan A. Cole is
reviewing the submissions and as soon as the winning theme is
announced, we'll be sure to let you know. But your contribution
to the Centennial Celebration doesn't have to end there.
As we come upon this
milestone, we would ask that you, the 80,000 + alumni, tell us
what you remember most about your experience at Montclair State:
stories about the friendships you made, remembrances of faculty
members who made a difference, campus memories. We also want to
know about your life after Montclair State--how did your years
at MSU influence you?
