 Montclair State Graduates Have Degrees Conferred
Montclair State President Susan A. Cole conferred 3,745 degrees at Commencement exercises at the Izod Center at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, Fri., May 21. Speaking and receiving an honorary Doctor of Letters degree at the ceremony was James Bradley, author, Flags of Our Fathers, Flyboys: A True Story of Courage, and The Imperial Cruise: The Secret History of Empire and War
Prior to Commencement, convocation ceremonies were held by each of the schools and colleges where other honorary degrees were awarded: College of Education & Human Services, Charles Magliaro '54, former Superintendent of East Hanover School District; School of Business, Steve Forbes, President and Chief Executive Officer of Forbes and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes magazine; College of the Arts, "Cousin Brucie" Morrow, radio personality; Graduate School, John Wallace '66 MA, President, NBC Local Media Division, College of Science & Mathematics, Richard Axel, Columbia University Professor and Nobelist in Physiology or Medicine, 2004, and College of Humanities & Social Sciences, Fahima Vorgetts, Afghani women's advocate and activist.

 Class of 1960 Celebrates Golden Anniversary
Members of the Class of 1960 celebrated their 50th anniversary last month. They began their celebration with a cocktail reception on May 20 in the University Hall Conference Center. The next day, members of the Class of 1960 were honored at the Commencement ceremony. The reunion class (pictured above) led the procession wearing academic caps and gowns and the "official" golden anniversary sash.  Carpe Diem Society Honors Alumni and Friends
Members of the Carpe Diem Society, a group of Montclair State alumni and friends, joined University administrators and students on May 6 for the third annual Carpe Diem Society luncheon on campus. Honoring those who have made a commitment to Montclair State through their estate plans, the luncheon featured greetings from Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Willard P. Gingerich (pictured above, far left, with Society members), students from the University's Honors Program and a performance by students from the John J. Cali School of Music.

Annual Dinner Celebrates Scholarships
More than 300 members of the University community and friends gathered together at the University Hall Conference Center on April 29 for the Montclair State University Foundation’s Annual Scholarship Dinner. The dinner is held each year to honor Carpe Diem Award recipients and to raise funds for student scholarships.
At this year’s dinner, President Susan A. Cole announced that the remarkable sum of around $300,000 had been raised for student scholarships. The donors’ exceptional generosity will enable many students who might otherwise have difficulty paying for their educations, to be able pursue their academic goals.
This year’s recipient of the Carpe Diem Award was Susan L. Blount, senior vice president and general counsel of Prudential Financial, Inc. and a member of the Montclair State University Board of Trustees. The award, which honors particularly distinguished Montclair State alumni and friends for their outstanding professional and personal achievements, was presented by Board of Trustees Chair Douglas L. Kennedy.
Also honored at the dinner were six Montclair State students: Michelle Cartagena, Afshana Ladha, Zalaya Ivy, Erika Schnatz, Ian Honauer, and Matthew Hyde. The six, all scholarship recipients themselves, have distinguished themselves as embodying the University’s “Seize-the-Day” spirit, and each received the Student Carpe Diem Award from President Cole.

Career Seminar for Alumni Coming This Month
 The Center for Career Services and the Office of Alumni Relations will host a career seminar for alumni featuring guest speaker Dr. Connie Pritchard, founder of the Pritchard Group, Inc. Pritchard will present "Selling Your Accomplishments and Experience: Professional Presentation Skills/Job Search Drama: Keeping Sane while Looking for Work." Pritchard has more than 20 years of experience in training and business and has presented seminars and workshops around the country. All participants will receive a copy of the book, "What Color is Your Parachute," by Richard Bolles. The best-selling book is designed to help those struggling to find part-time and full-time employment in these hard economic times acquire the job-search tools they need faster and more efficiently. Gifted & Talented Information Session, June 2
University Hall, Room 1020, 7 p.m.
Montclair State University’s Academically Gifted and Talented Youth Program have scheduled information sessions about its summer camp programs for gifted students in grades K-11.
At the session, the director or the assistant director of the gifted and talented program will give a brief presentation followed by a Q & A session. The information session is open to the public and those interested in attending may RSVP to giftedmsu@mail.montclair.edu. Parking is available in the Red Hawk Deck.
Field School Open House, June 5
Bond House (south side of campus, across from Normal Ave.), 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
The Center for Heritage & Archaeological Studies and the Department of Anthropology, with the help of Anthropology students, are once again conducting excavations in the vicinity of the Bond House in an effort to further document the history of the building and the area immediately around it. Come watch the ongoing excavation, interact with the archaeologists and learn first-hand about the late 19th Century Van Reyper-Bond House. From noon to 1 p.m. archaeologist Dr. Peter Siegel, Director of the field school, will discuss the history of the house, now listed in the State and National Registers of Historic Places, from its construction in 1872 until it became part of the MSU campus.

Learn how a graduate degree, certification, or certificate from Montclair State University can give your career that extra edge! The Graduate Information Session is designed to provide potential applicants an overview of the following: Benefits of graduate study, graduate application and admissions process, financial aid (a representative will be there to answer your questions). Immediately following the Information Session, there will be breakout sessions only on these programs: Master of Business Administration, Initial Instructional Certification and Master of Arts in Teaching and Urban Teacher Residency. Discussion/Book Signing, "Dixie Walker of the Dodgers,"June 12
Yogi Berra Museum, 11 a.m. -12:30 p.m.
Famed sportswriter Maury Allen and Susan Walker, daughter of Brooklyn Dodgers star Dixie Walker, will discuss and sign copies of their new book about the man known in Brooklyn as "The People's Cherce." Walker, who was groomed to replace Babe Ruth for the Yankees, played eight years in Brooklyn and as a Southerner objected to playing with Jackie Robinson. For information call 973-655-6891.
Passaic River Symposium, June 22
It is time to reconvene at the biennial Passaic River Symposium to discuss all aspects of environmental issues relevant to the Passaic River Basin. We will gauge progress made in addressing problems, learn about new efforts, and discuss remaining challenges. The three previous symposia (see archived materials at the web site) attracted nearly 300 participants each – this fourth symposium promises to be equally attractive.
The "Lower Passaic River Restoration Project" will be prominently featured in the Symposium. Projects and issues in the upper River and tributary watersheds will also be examined. For full details, visit http://csam.montclair.edu/pri/conferences/.
