 Athletic Training Facility Renamed in Honor of John Davis and Dr. M. Benjamin Burton
Montclair State University renamed its Athletic Training facility the John Davis and Dr. M. Benjamin Burton Athletic Training Sports Medicine Center. “The dedication of the John Davis and Dr. M. Benjamin Burton Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Center offers us an opportunity to recognize the significant contributions of Ben Burton and John Davis,” said MSU Director of Athletics Holly Gera. “Ben has been a tremendous friend of Montclair State athletics and the athletic training program. His assistance in diagnosing and rehabilitating our student athletes is very much appreciated. We are proud to honor him in this naming of our facility along with John.” For the past 25 years, Davis has served as the Head Athletic Trainer at Montclair State providing the highest level of athletic training care to the 17 teams that MSU sponsors. A graduate of Ursinus College and East Stroudsburg University, Davis has been instrumental in turning the Montclair State Athletic Training program into one of the most reputable not only in New Jersey but on the East Coast. US News Ranks Montclair State University in Top 20 for Education Programs
Montclair State University's graduate programs in secondary teacher education and elementary teacher education were ranked 14 and 17 respectively in the 2010 US News and World Report rankings of America's Best Graduate Schools. The rankings include 278 doctoral-granting schools of education from throughout the United States, and Montclair State University placed ahead of renowned institutions including Harvard, New York University, and the University of California-Berkeley in these categories.
"Montclair State's programs are now receiving the national accolades that New Jersey educators have long bestowed on our programs, faculty, and students," said Ada Beth Cutler, dean of the College of Education and Human Services. "Our reputation as a premier College of Education has been longstanding and growing, and we are honored to achieve this national recognition."
This recognition of University-wide accomplishments in teacher education comes on the heels of two other recent honors. Later this month at the Annual Meeting of AERA (American Educational Research Association), Montclair State University will receive the 2010 Wisniewski Award from the Society of Professors of Education. The purpose of this annual award is to recognize an institution that has made "singularly significant contributions to the theory and practice of teacher education." The University also recently learned it was selected by the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Foundation as one of 27 host institutions where Woodrow Wilson-Rockefeller Brothers Aspiring Teachers of Color Fellows may pursue MAT degrees. These 27 institutions were selected from among 159 invited applications.

Sprague Library Archives Give Glimpse Into the Past
Montclair State University opened the Sprague Library Archives last month with a special ribbon cutting ceremony (pictured above: Judith Lin Hunt, dean of Library Services, Paul Martinez, librarian archivist, James Bruns, vice president of University Advancement and Rocky). The Sprague Library Archives is a repository for many of the documents relating to the history of Montclair State College/University and is available for reference and research by administrators, faculty, students, alumni and other interested parties. The Archives are located in Room 029 in the Multimedia Department (lower level) of the Harry A. Sprague Library. A sample of just some of the things you can find there include: old yearbooks, student newspapers and literary publications, commencement programs, issues of the alumni magazine, documents and photographs relating to the history of Montclair State and more. PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies at Montclair State University Launched
The latest addition to Montclair State University’s growing list of institutes and centers, the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies (PSEGISS), was officially opened by President Susan A. Cole at a ceremony in the courtyard of University Hall on April 21. Joining President Cole at the event were Ralph A. LaRossa, President and COO of PSE&G and other business leaders, government dignitaries, and Montclair State students, faculty, staff, and administration. Established by a generous three-year grant from the PSEG Foundation, the Institute will conduct sustainability science research, education, public policy development, and outreach. In her opening remarks, President Cole stated that “The collaboration between Montclair State University and PSEG will focus on real-world approaches to sustainability, a discipline that requires the merging of the sciences with policy and the economy, and the study of the interactions among environmental issues and human activities."
Together with the launching of PSEGISS, the event was the occasion for unveiling a state resolution—and a similar Montclair State student resolution—to rename Earth Day as Sustainable Earth Day in New Jersey. The state resolution was read by Assemblyman Thomas P. Giblin (34th district), and Preciado represented the Montclair State student body in signing the student resolution.
Bell Society Members Come Back to Campus
Bell Society members (graduates from the class of 1959 and prior) attended a performance by the MSU Chorale and the MSU Singers at the Alexander Kasser Theater on April 23. The Chorale performed Benjamin Britten’s "Saint Nicolas, Op. 42" with tenor Peter Gilis. The Singers performed works including English choral anthems by Dove and Howells; romantic composers Rheinberger, Saint-Saëns and Wolf; MSU student composers Thomas Oltarzewski and Martin Sedek, and more. Immediately following, Bell Society members mingled at a post-performance reception.

Italian Opera, "La Scala di Seta,"

In partnership with MSU’s Coccia Institute for the Italian Experience in America, the MSU Opera Workshop and MSU Symphony join forces to offer a fully-staged production of Gioacchino Rossini’s beloved operatic romp. "La Scala di Seta" (The Silken Ladder) portrays the confusion that results when a girl and her lover try unsuccessfully to conceal their secret marriage from the young lady’s guardian. A masterpiece of comic timing, complete with characters hidden in closets who misunderstand what they overhear to hilarious effect, the opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. How Top Football Coaches Build Successful Programs, May 14
Breakfast workshop featuring some of New Jersey's most accomplished football coaches. Guest coaches include: Rick Giancola, Montclair State head coach and winner of nine NJAC titles; Mike Miello, Hackensack HS coach; Doug Wilkins, Mountain Lakes HS coach and 2009 New Jersey Coach of the Year; and Warren Wolf, recently retired Brick HS coach. Program, moderated by John McCarthy, founder of Museum's Coaching Institute, is sanctioned by NJSIAA and all participants will receive four hours of professional in-service credit. Workshop fee: $50. BFA 2010, May 15 – 29
The Department of Art and Design presents BFA 2010, a show that features works from nine graduating seniors in the BFA program.
Koury Brewer- printmaking, Melissa Gryzwalski and Andrew Fondanaros - sculpture, Michael Zawadski, Christine Buonomo and Karla Griffin - photography, and Justin Rivera, Richard Franco and Kyle Coniglio - painting.
Also featured in this exhibition are films by 19 graduating students from the filmmaking program, each 30 minutes in length. Opening reception will be held on May 15 from noon to 4 p.m.
Theater Day for Teachers, May 21
The College of the Arts, Office of Education and Community Outreach will host its third annual Theater Day for Teachers on May 21, from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Teachers involved in all aspects of theater production are invited to participate in professional workshops in acting, directing, producing, stagecraft, musical theater, choreography, auditions and stage management. Fee is $120 and includes breakfast and lunch. For more information, click here.

Each college and school will host a convocation ceremony in the Amphitheater celebrating students' achievements before the official conferral of degrees at Commencement. on May 21.
