MSUAA ANNUAL
MEETING
On May
20, the Montclair State Alumni Association held its Annual Meeting
in University Hall. Executive Board inductions took place, including
that of new Alumni Association president, Frank R. Alvarez '76 who replaced Wayne D. DeFeo '80, '82 MA after his four year term came to an end. James Wassel '73 '78 MA, Executive Vice President and
Vivian Lalumia
'86, Treasurer will serve two-year terms.

Margaret Hait '70 '76 MA and
Mary J. Santorella '89 were elected
Members At Large.
Members at large who were elected but not at the meeting are
Joseph DiMichele '91 '93 MA and
Charnette Blackmon '84.
DeFeo passed on the president’s gavel to Alvarez who earned his
Bachelor’s degree from
Montclair
State
University
in 1976 followed
by an M.A. and Doctorate in Educational Administration from Teachers
College, Columbia University. Alvarez has
served as the Superintendent
of the Montclair Public Schools since
2003. He previously served in the district as principal of Nishuane
and Mt. Hebron Schools from 1989 to 1994. An advocate of public
education, he serves on several
professional boards. His interests
include issues of equity and access and the need for schools to
become communities of inquiry. As an adjunct professor at Montclair
State University, he is also committed to training the next
generation of school administrators.
Alvarez recognized DeFeo’s 10 years of service to the MSU Alumni
Association, the past four as
president. He noted DeFeo's contributions to helping beautify the campus
with Alumni Green as well as bringing
a formal recycling program to
MSU. “Wayne has continually demonstrated his commitment to the
growth and advancement of both the Alumni Association and Montclair
State University,” said Alvarez.

NJ Higher Education Budget Crisis
Governor Jon Corzine's proposed Fiscal Year 2007 budget proposes to
cut funding to higher education by $169 million.
The New
Jersey Legislature will be reviewing the Governor's budget
and
undoubtedly making some modifications to it as it does every year.
You are urged to contact your legislator to advise them that the
proposed cuts would be extremely harmful to higher education in
general and Montclair State in particular.

your calendars. Homecoming is scheduled for September 30.
This is an event you don’t want to miss. Fun, food, football – it’s
all
part of the celebration.
A collaboration of the Career Development Department and the Alumni
Relations Office, the annual Career Fair for Alumni and Students
is set for
November 7 in the Student Center Ballrooms. More than 50 employers
participated in last year’s Fair. Proceeds fund the
Alumni Job Bank,
College Central, which now boasts more than 2,000 employers. On any
given day, an average of 200 active jobs is posted there.
