Tours. Travel arrangements, housing, faculty-led field trips and overnight

experience appropriate for novice and experienced travelers.
Literary
Study Tour
In
the Footsteps of Great Irish Writers
(June 28July 8)
Led by Dr. Gregory Waters
Explore Ireland through the world of its greatest novelists, poets and
playwrights: Joyce, Yeats, Beckett, Shaw, Swift, Wilde and Synge. Walk
the streets and alleys of Dublin and Galway, as well as the stony paths
of Sligo, Inishmore and Connemara. Led by Waters, a professor of English
and director of the University's Honors Program, the group will visit
the homes of famous writers, the Dublin Writers' Museum, the Abbey Theatre,
churches, cemeteries, castles and other archaeological wonders--and of
course the pubs. See The Book of Kells at Trinity College, the cliffs
and caves of the Aran Isles, Yeats' Ben Bulben and The Lake Isle of Innisfree.
"Ireland has always attracted writers and visionaries, poets and
playwrights," Waters said. "The land has a special appeal to
the imagination, and we plan to visit some of the most enchanted locations
the country offers." A reading list will be provided for participants.
Theater
Study Tour
Montclair
in London, Stratford and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
(August 619)
Led by Professor Susan Kerner
Led by a theater director and professor, this tour provides an introduction
to three major theater festivals in Britain. Participants attend performances
in the United Kingdom's most exciting theatrical venues in London, Stratford
and Edinburgh. In meeting the creative collaborators who make the productions
happen, travelers will gain an insider's view as they examine the theatrical
traditions that shape contemporary performances. Additional programming
is arranged for participating K-12 teachers to explore adaptations for
the classroom. The program includes six days in London at Shakespeare's
Globe Theatre and the Royal National Theatre, two days in Stratford-upon-Avon
and four days at the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival. It includes
lectures, discussions and workshops regarding Shakespearean and contemporary
plays with leading scholars, theater historians, actors, designers, directors
and critics; and guided tours of historical sites and backstage at theaters.
A reading list of plays will be provided.
Culinary
Study Tour
Cucina
Italiana--Deciphering the Heartland Meal
(July 1531)
Led by Dr. Charles Feldman
Enjoy a two-week pilgrimage through the Italian provinces of Tuscany and
Umbria. Culinary adventurers will follow a professor of food studies as
they discover the social, cultural and historic messages behind the Italian
heartland meal. In addition to an exploration of small farms, food producers
and restaurants that are "off the beaten track," the excursion
includes stopovers in Florence, Siena, Orvieto, Perugia and localities
in between. Take trips to festal events, visits to a sheep milk cheese
producer and a saluminico (pork facility), a truffle hunt, wine and olive
oil grove tours and tasting. Participants will collect the knowledge and
ingredients that will be used in producing a capstone villa banquet.
Ecology
Study Tour
Wildlife
of East Africa
(July 520)
Led by Dr. Jacalyn Willis
Take advantage of the rich natural and cultural diversity found in northern
Tanzania, an area that is quintessentially Africa. The contrasting landscapes
and variety of animals make this area the ultimate destination for wildlife
enthusiasts. Led by an experienced ecologist and educator, as well as
local guides, participants will explore the famous Serengeti Plains and
the Ngorongoro Crater, known to sustain the greatest concentration of
wildlife in the world. There also will be excursions to the smaller, but
equally spectacular national parks: Lake Manyara, Tarangire and Arusha
National Park. Participants have the option of extending their adventure
with excursions to Mt. Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar or Nairobi, Kenya.
