Montclair State University maintains a partnership with the Alliance for Arts and Health NJ, whose mission is to connect artists and arts professionals, and those who provide health and wellness services. This is accomplished by creating, maintaining, and making available a comprehensive network of all relevant providers, and by dedicating its work to education, advocacy, research, professional development, and best practices in the arenas of both health and wellness, and the arts
This partnership grew out of MSU’s NJ Arts in Health Initiative, which was a collaborative project to facilitate, document and demonstrate the interrelationships between the arts and health in the State of New Jersey through partners such as universities, hospitals, community organizations and state agencies.
According to the World Health Organization, good health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being; as defined by Dr. Kenneth Pelliter –
Health is functioning at your best,
whatever it is you do.
Research specific to the arts emerging from the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia indicates that participation and involvement in creative activity can contribute to better health and stronger communities and that there is a strong correlation between the health of individuals and that of their community.
