Peter Barnet, M. Teresa Lapid Rodriguez, Gail Stavitsky, and Anne Betty Weinshenker, curators
Will Barnet will celebrate his 100th birthday next year. For this occasion, The George Segal Gallery will present his works of the last 60 years, which are devoted to a fusion of his long-time preoccupation with total abstraction and figuration. The works are also graced with an unusual combination of opposing artistic qualities forming a balance between personal and universal realities. Focusing on the representation of women and familial settings, he captures a solitary world of women who are content and dignified.
Barnet’s art is characterized by the unity of opposite qualities. His abstractions result from simple flat masses rendered in carefully selected muted colors representing recognizable narrative images, such as women, animals, and architecture all working together as elements within a balanced composition. Somber, peaceful, and thoughtful, the figures occupy shallow spaces defined by overlapping shapes and images captured at moments of deep thought. A cerebral artist with a discerning eye, Barnet’s work is unique in the world because of these qualities.
Speakers will each present their views of Will Barnet’s legacy in the realm of fine art.
