In 1962 Dr.and Mrs. Oscar K. Cosla bequeathed to Montclair State University a significant collection of thirty-five 16th to 19th century paintings. The origins of this collection are traced to Italy with the de Clerici family. The over 250 year-old collection is a fraction of a much bigger collection given to daughter Anne de Clerici as a dowry in 1760 for her marriage to William K. Cosla of Romania. The collection had since been enriched by at least four generations of the Cosla family. It was under threat of destruction during WWII, prompting the family to move it from place to place until a safe haven was found in San Francisco where the fourth generation Mrs. Cosla was born. A selection of the paintings are now on permanent display in the Alexander Kasser Theater on the campus of Montclair State University.
