How You Can Help/ Ways to Give

Gifts are welcomed in all shapes and sizes. Smaller gifts can support a program; larger gifts can involve naming a building or scholarship endowment. Equally appreciated are gifts-in-kind (art work, musical instruments, library collections) as well as gifts of your time and expertise. No matter the size or shape, every gift contributes to the quality and diversity of University life — not only for our students but for the community we serve. And there are no hidden fees to dilute your intention. One hundred percent of your gift goes to the area you specify.

. . . About 350,000 students will earn degrees at Montclair State University during its second century. This campaign will help us prepare for them and assure the quality of education we provide in our second hundred years.

Below are some ways to contribute to Montclair. We also are very much interested in hearing your ideas.

Dr. Susan A. Cole, President of Montclair State University

Scholarships

Creating new scholarships is a priority of President Cole and the School of the Arts. College costs continue to increase while state support decreases. You can help. Do you know how easy it is to establish a scholarship? There are relatively few steps and the Scholarship Establishment Worksheet will show you how. To enable us to identify the most deserving students, donors are encouraged to establish minimally restrictive criteria using a laddering technique such as: -first priority should be given to "a"; second priority to "b", etc.

Below are short descriptions of scholarship types:

  • Endowed Scholarships award the interest earned by the endowed amount each year and effectively go on "forever". Endowments may be created incrementally over 3 years and are exceptional naming opportunities for honoring people special to you while at the same time promoting higher education and assisting deserving students.
  • Annual Scholarships are pledges to donate a specific dollar amount over a determined number of years (or ongoing to the extent possible) to award to qualified students in the years specified.
  • Lump Sum Scholarships are gifts of a certain amount that are awarded at one time and are incrementally awarded until the money has been exhausted.
  • The General Scholarship Fund is an account whereby funds can be contributed to support a number of scholarships throughout the University.
  • School of the Arts Board Scholarship- This is an existing scholarship to which donations may be added that awards scholarships exclusively to students in the School of the Arts.

Naming Gifts

There are many opportunities to contribute naming gifts within the School of the Arts starting at $500. Naming opportunities include options for Tribute Gifts or Memorial Gifts and can be greatly enhanced if in combination with a Corporate Matching Gift. Establishing a naming gift is much easier than you might think. Large gifts of $10,000 or more may be paid over the course of three years and also in quarterly installments, with pledge reminders sent on a regular basis.

Tribute Gifts/Gifts In Honor

What can you give to the person who has everything? How about a charitable gift in his/her name? Opportunities to name a seat or section of the Alexander Kasser Theater, or to create a scholarship in someone's name, are just two examples. The MSU Foundation will send this special person a card recognizing your gift.

Memorial Gifts

Memorial gifts are also an opportunity to remember someone special in your life. Opportunities to name a seat or section of the Alexander Kasser Theater or to create a scholarship in someone?s name are just two examples. We ask that you designate the School of the Arts as a charitable destination when requesting memorial gifts in lieu of flowers. The MSU Foundation will send a card to the person(s) who contribute, recognizing their memorial gift(s). As a charitable donation, these gifts are also tax deductible.

Corporate Matching Gifts
DOUBLE OR TRIPLE THE SIZE OF YOUR GIFT!

Through corporate matching gift programs you can double, even triple, your gift. It is easy to do and a benefit many are not aware of. Many companies include this incentive on their web sites and through their Human Resources Department. If your company does not offer this benefit you may qualify through another family member's company. A Corporate Matching Gifts brochure is available upon request Tell us Your Interests.

Payment Options

Mary Mochary with President Cole

There are several methods for making contribution payments to the School of the Arts.

Outright Gifts - Donate cash, securities, or personal property. These make a quick and easy gift.

Installment Plans - Pledges may be paid in quarterly installments. Installment giving allows donors to allocate their charitable giving over the course of the year and in many cases enables larger contributions, easing the effects of one large donation. Many donors who aspire to joining a specific MSU Giving Recognition Level achieve this by making four equal installments to qualify at the desired level.

Credit Cards - Gifts to Montclair State may also be made on MasterCard or VISA and qualify as a purchase for points programs associated with your card. Installment plans on credit cards are another viable method to increase your giving capacity and achieve Honor Roll status. Credit card gifts are treated the same as any other gift and should qualify for Corporate Matching Gifts. (please check with your employer)
