Locations for concerts are noted after each listing. Concerts in all locations except Kasser Theater are free unless otherwise noted. Programs are subject to change.

MSU Ensemble-in-Residence, Newband, presents the premiere of Café Buffé (music by Dean Drummond and text by Charles Bernstein). Café Buffé is a one-act comic opera about food. Set in a café/restaurant/bar, the cast consists of a waiter and several patrons who tell their absurd stories, filled with endless plays on words, completely illogical statements, and extreme exaggeration. Eighteen musicians playing a mixture of conventional, electronic, Harry Partch and Dean Drummond instruments are onstage throughout. Kasser Theater*

Thur. 19 — 7:30 pm Leshowitz Chamber Music Series This concert marks the first of the three concert Leshowitz Chamber Music Series. It features the debut of the John J. Cali Trio with Boris Kucharsky, David Singer and David Witten. Faculty/student performances include works by of Schubert, Beethoven and Brahms, plus a performance by a tuba-euphonium 4tet, the "Eubaphones." Chapin 201 - Seating is limited. Fri. 20 — 7:30 pm David Bixler’s Auction Project featuring Grammy Award winning pianist Arturo O’Farrill, with Heather Bixler (violin), Roland Guerrero (percussion), Vince Cherico (drums and cymbals), Carlo DeRosa (bass), and David Bixler (composer, arranger, and alto saxophone). Mr. Bixler’s composition took shape at a fundraiser for his daughter’s school. Combining Latin and Celtic music and a unique instrumentation, Auction Project is jazz with Afro-Celtic sympathies. This concert is a free public performance supported by a generous grant from the Keating Crawford Foundation. It is presented at Montclair State University in memory of Beatrice Crawford, a Montclair musician who was the director of two choral groups “The Madrigals” and “The Choraliers.” (Kasser Theater - free admission but tickets are required)*

Wed. 20 — 1 pm Annual Jack Sacher Memorial Alumni Lecture - Lawrence Ferrara, Director and Professor at New York University's Steinhardt School, Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, is a pianist and author with expertise in music theory, aesthetics, music history, and music copyright. Author of numerous journal articles and book chapters as well as books including Philosophy and the Analysis of Music (Greenwood) and Keyboard Harmony and Improvisation. He has recorded for Orion and Musique Internationale and is a forensic music copyright consultant for every major recording and publishing company and many artists, including Andrew Lloyd Webber, Gloria Estefan, BillyJoel, Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey, Elton John, James Brown, Ludacris, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Eminem, Jay Z, Dr. Dre, Prince, Toby Keith, Beastie Boys, and Jennifer Lopez.- Leshowitz Recital Hall

Based on the true story of Siamese twins Violet and Daisy Hilton who became stars during the Depression, Side Show is a moving portrait of two women joined at the hip whose extraordinary bondage brings them fame but denies them love. Told almost entirely in song, the show follows their progression from England to America, around the vaudeville circuit and to Hollywood on the eve of their appearance in the 1932 movie Freaks. Thur. 1 — 7:30 pm Duo Prism: Jesse Mills, violin & Reiko Aizawa, piano – Works by Mozart, Takemitsu, Bartok and Grieg. Formed in 2005, Duo Prism won 1st Prize at the Gaetano Zinetti International Chamber Music Competition in Verona, Italy in 2006. They are known for performances of contemporary and traditional works. Ms. Aizawa, the last pupil of Miecyslaw Horszowski, made her United States debut in 1988 under the baton of Alexander Schneider at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. Mr. Mills, a member of the Cali School faculty, was nominated for a Grammy in 2005 for his work with renowned cellist Fred Sherry. Leshowitz Recital Hall - Seating is limited. Renowned jazz bassist Christian McBride joins Shanghai in an eclectic program that features Dvořák’s String Quintet in G major with Double Bass Op. 77. In partnership with MSU’s Coccia Institute for the Italian Experience in America, the MSU Opera Workshop and MSU Symphony join forces to offer a fully-staged production of Rossini’s beloved operatic romp. La Scala di Seta portrays the confusion that results when a girl and her lover try unsuccessfully to conceal their secret marriage from the young lady’s guardian. A masterpiece of comic timing, complete with characters hidden in closets who misunderstand what they overhear to hilarious effect, the opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles.
