T.A.L.O.N received the National Association of Division III
Athletic Administrators & Jostens Community Service Award of Merit from Club Advisor Tara Rienecker.
Accepting the award were Board Members Laura Chegwidden, Kevin Michel, Jaimie Lukas.

Teaching Athletes Leadership Opportunities Now (T.A.L.O.N,) was founded in 2000 by Tara Rienecker, Academic Advisor and Holly Gera, Director of Athletics and was charted as an official Class III organization of the SGA in Spring 2002.

T.A.L.O.N is made up of student-athlete leaders on campus who serve to represent the voice of the student-athlete at Montclair State University. TALON also represents the student-athletes in the New Jersey Athletic Conference SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee) and the NCAA SAAC. Each team is asked to have a member serve as a representative of their team whom is elected by their peers or nominated by their coach In addition, many student-athletes get involved to enhance their overall experience at MSU. The goals of the group are:
- Serve the community through volunteer work and community outreach
- Provide a liaison between athletic staff, campus faculty/staff and the student-athletes
- Provide an forum for student-athletes to have a voice on campus
- Unify the MSU athletic programs
- Encourage student-athlete support among students
- Serve as a support system for all athletes to address many of the issues associated with college athletics

The members of T.A.L.O.N not only work hard on the playing fields, but also put much time and dedication into the club. The group works to serve the campus and local community, they provide a liaison between the athletic staff, university staff, and student-athletes, work to unify and strengthen the Red Hawks athletic programs, serve as a support system for all athletes to address issues associated with college athletics, and encourage student-athlete support among all students.

T.A.L.O.N participates and facilitates many activities for the MSU Campus. Events include the Athlete Olympics, Annual Athlete Ball, and National Student-Athlete Day. In addition to the campus community involvement, T.A.L.O.N is heavily involved with local surrounding communities. Activities include the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, Annual Christmas Toy Drive, participation in the Police Athletic League (PAL) of Montclair, and involvement with the Heroes and Cool Kids program, sponsored by NY Jets.
