"What Happened to the Street?"
Faculty of MSU and Montclair High School coordinated a documentary project
during the spring of 2002. Students of the high school's Center for Social
Justice (CSJ) interviewed family members, local business owners and leaders
to explore their experiences as long-term residents in the Pine Street and
Glenfield Park neighborhoods and the impact the Montclair Connection train
line has had on the community perceptions of what the future holds. A reception
recognizing the stories uncovered and the ethnographic talents of the students
was held on June 14th in the Montclair Public Library.
Youth Mentoring Program
As a result of COPC partnerships, a mentoring program has been institutionalized
through a joint venture involving the Glenfield Middle School in Montclair
and Montclair State University. Students in grades six through eight from
Glenfield Middle School participate in a mentoring program at MSU on a
weekly basis where they join with MSU students in the Emerging Leader
Learning Community, a collaborative venture of the following MSU programs:
New Student Experience; Student Leadership; Educational Opportunity Fund
and Service Learning.
