Purpose
Service-Learning seeks to support the development of informed and involved citizens through the integration of service to the community with academic course work.
Through cross-disciplinary courses, Service-Learning at MSU provides students with the opportunity to change the way they see their world. By contributing to the community, our students learn about political and organizational structures, cultures and age groups not their own, and the importance of keeping an open mind.
Service-Learning courses are taught by MSU faculty, most of whom decide to become Service-Learning Faculty Fellows. The purpose of the Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program is to develop scholars who will integrate the philosophy, pedagogy, and process of Service-Learning into each component of their professional life - teaching, research and professional service. It is expected that this initiative will increase the number and variety of Service-Learning courses and lend greater legitimacy to Service-Learning faculty when reappointment, tenure and promotion evaluations are made.
Six fellowships are awarded through a competitive process, and the selected faculty members will be designated Service-Learning Faculty Fellows. The Service-Learning Faculty Fellows Program is funded by the Leshowitz Urban Initiative Fund.
