Promotion
is a professional milestone for faculty. Unlike teachers in the primary
and secondary systems, faculty in higher education must organize tangible
proof of their value to their institutions and profession imbedded in
narrative which will be judged by peers and administration.
The advantages inherent in the use of technology are not limited to
enhancing the quality of teaching and learning. Teaching porfolios which
can be included in promotion papers; Student surveys, as a complement
to traditional student evaluations of faculty, can provide either an
enhanced view of faculty teaching performance or can clarify what appear
to be lacunae in performance; More precise assessment of student learning
can be mined from such tools as Blackboard tallies of student access
to various Blackboard resources.
The criteria
for promotion are guidelines published by university administration.
In our performance system, evaluation in four categories: Teaching,
Scholarship of Pedagogy, Scholarship of Discovery, Integration, and
Aesthetic Creation, or Scholarship of Application, are the categories
in which we place examples of our achievement and expertise.
