Designs, Diagrams, and Tables

Synopsis

Students identify, for each of the four basic epidemiological study designs, where data from a flow diagram "fit" into a 2x2 table, reinforcing the value of a 2x2 table as a tool for:

• Classifying disease occurrence according to exposure status
• Calculating risks of disease among the exposed and unexposed
• Calculating the relative risk
• Making inferences

Approximately one class period. Time can be managed by decreasing the number of challenge questions.

Look For Students To:

	Identify a flow diagram for each of the four basic epidemiological study designs.
	Relate flow diagrams to 2x2 tables for each study design.
