Session 2 – July 19 – August 6

Montclair State is pleased to announce the 29th Annual Summer Camp for qualified students. Our 2010 program will feature a new approach to our afternoon cultural and recreational program and will continue to offer our morning academic workshops.
The Summer Camp Program will accept applications from students who have completed Kindergarten by June, 2010 but have not yet begun grade 11. Students entering grade 12 will be eligible for a counselor in training position. The applications will be available in February 2010.

Mornings: Eligible students will be able to select among a wide variety of over 100 course options in math, science, technology and the humanities. Course topics range from Genetics, Calculus, 3D Character Animation, Graphic Novels, Chaos Theory and Veterinary Science to Landscape Painting and Public Speaking.  Gifted students will have an opportunity to choose courses that advance their academic performance and potential and awaken and expand their interests.

Afternoons: The 2010 Camp Season will offer a new approach to our afternoon culture and recreation program.

  • Recreation: Students will explore a wider array of recreational options including martial arts, dance, yoga, ice skating, fencing, tennis, and swimming. Teams will also compete in problem solving challenges specifically designed for gifted youth.
  • Culture: The cultural portion of the program will feature our International Program. Students will explore the music, dance, stories and traditions of our international teaching assistants. Workshops in the visual and performing arts will include Acting, Theatrical Improvisation, Magic, Illustration, 3D Computer Animation, World Music and Music Performance.

Eligibility: Applicants must be in the top 5 percent of their class in academic performance or in the 95th percentile on a tested area of the standardized tests administered by their schools. Students who have been identified as academically gifted by their school districts or have participated in a local gifted program are invited to apply. If a student has a strong recommendation from a teacher or administrator as potentially being in one of the above categories, then he or she is also welcome to apply. Qualified students will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Counselor in Training Program: Gifted students entering their senior year in fall of 2010 will be eligible to participate in our Counselor in Training Program. They will assist the teachers and counselors during the cultural and recreational program and will provide assistance to our teachers during our morning academic program. Applications will be available in February and interviews will be set up in March.
