Teaching in English: Faculty Training Program
In response to an expressed need by universities abroad to train their professors to teach courses in various disciplines in English, Montclair State University developed a content-based English language training program which addressed the problem that English language education in developing countries often falls short of meeting the high standards of language skills required for advanced discipline-specific communication in academic and professional settings. Content-based teaching, which focuses in the complex and particular language usages related to specific fields of study, has been demonstrated to be an extremely effective pedagogical approach to developing advanced English language skills. This program deploys Montclair State University faculty members from various disciplines, all of whom have expertise in content-based teaching, to spend six weeks working directly with faculty from disciplines in the humanities, natural and applied sciences, business and social sciences in the host university. The program consists of content-based methodology, essential English for content-based instruction, advanced English writing to develop professional writing skills, oral English to improve univesity classroom presentation skills, teaching strategies suitable for use in university classrooms, and examination of teaching materials for content-based instructors.
The program is individually designed to meet the needs of each university for more information call Dr. Marina Cunningham: 973-655-7566
