Teaching in English:

A Faculty Training Program

The Global Education Center at Montclair State University offers a customized
professional training program to faculty at universities in non-English speaking
countries. Designed for instructors of various disciplines to teach their subject
areas in English, the program provides intensive training courses in English
methodology and language skills.

Program Duration and Schedule
Program duration is between 3 to 5 intensive weeks and can be scheduled from
the middle of May to the middle of August.

Program Faculty
Program faculty are specially selected Montclair State University professors from
various disciplines who have strong backgrounds and experience in teaching
English as a second and/or foreign language and in teacher training. Each faculty member teaches one intensive course.

Course of Study
The following courses are presently being offered. Existing courses can be adapted to your particular needs, and/or other courses can be designed.

  • Essential English for Content-based Instructors improves and strengthens spoken English for classroom purposes and conversation. It develops speaking techniques for teaching content-based materials in English, introduces student-centered discussion strategies and practices a variety of spoken English activities to enhance content-based learning.
  • Advanced English Writing Skills for Content-based Instructors (in the Humanities, Business and the Social Sciences) reviews essential composition skills with special attention to common sentence and paragraph problems and introduces several special types of writing, such as summaries, abstracts, research proposals and grant proposals. Representative English writing samples for
    presentation at professional conferences or publication in professional journals are selected as readings for the course to familiarize trainees with requirements formats and standards of writing in the disciplines of the Humanities, Business and the Social Sciences.
  • Advanced English Writing Skills for Content-based Instructors (in the Natural and Applied Sciences) reviews essential composition skills with special attention to abstracts, literature surveys, research reports, progress reports, final reports, research proposals and grant proposals. Representative English writing samples for
    presentations at professional conferences or publication in professional journals are selected as readings for the course to familiarize trainees with basic styles of documentation in the natural and applied sciences.
  • Content-based Methodology and Teaching Workshop familiarizes trainees with a variety of theoretical concepts related to teaching and learning. In addition to teaching strategies suitable for use in university classrooms, it provides opportunities to practice these strategies in class, in small and large-group settings.
  • Foundations and Skills of Authentic English Pronunciation familiarizes trainees with some essential foundations of authentic English pronunciation to help trainees achieve native or native-like English pronunciation with a focus on aspects of the English sound system.

Location of Program
The program can either be organized at the overseas institution or at Montclair State University campus in northern New Jersey.


Certificate of Completion
Montclair State University will issue an official Certificate of Completion to each of the trainees who has successfully completed the courses of study.
