International Summer Institutes
MSU Faculty Led Short-Term Study Abroad Institutes
This hybrid course will acquaint you with the adventure stories, tales of monsters and beasts, stories of witchcraft, superhuman feats and fantastic love stories all contained in the ancient Greek mythologies and plays. The gods, mortals, family connections and power of place will be understood through exploration of the very sites in which the heroes of the mythologies resided and visit the theatres for which the plays were written.
The travel itinerary, which includes 8 nights in Athens, 3 nights on the island of Spetses and 1 night in Nauplion, allows participants to explore a wide range of historical sites important to Greek mythology and theater. Led by the faculty directors and an experienced bi-lingual representative from the Athens Centre, participants will spend several days in Athens visiting the Theatre of Dionysus, the Acropolis and the National Museum. A charter bus will take the group to Thebes where the stories of the Bacchae, Oedipus and Antigone take place. In Delphi, once considered the center of the earth, we will visit the oracle and the ancient temples and theatre. The group will also go to Mycennae, a site central to the stories of Odysseus and the House of Atreus, and continue to Epidavros, a magnificently preserved ancient theatre. Visits to the beautiful islands of Spetsos, Naphlion and Hydra are also included in the trip.
The Athens Centre, the local coordinator, has been bringing talented poets, artists, scholars, writers, and performers to Greece from the time of its founding in 1969. The Centre has organized workshops for sculpture on Naxos, art in Aegina, Spetses and Athens, and poetry in Athens and the islands. Their experienced and knowledgeable staff accompanies the groups for all field trips outside Athens, facilitating travel logistics and selecting the best possible local sites and guides.
