International Summer Institutes
MSU Faculty Led Short-Term Study Abroad Institutes
Montclair State University’s Health and Nutrition Science department offers undergraduate and graduate students an incredible opportunity to study the public health care system in Havana, Cuba. In addition to understanding the public health system and universal healthcare in the United States, this new summer course will offer students a unique look into Cuba’s healthcare system and politics during an important phase in the socioeconomic evolution of the island. Students will examine Cuba’s system of socialized medicine, and medical diplomacy in addition to understanding the critical issues in health policies and protocol, Cuban history, culture, and art. This course will offer students an opportunity to both compare, contrast and experience two unique forms of public health care. Cuba has undergone dramatic changes over the last two decades, and this course, with its focus on health care and practices gives students the chance both to witness and document these changes. This course combines study, research, and site visits to cultural and public health sites in Havana and surrounding areas, with transportation provided by the Martin Luther King Center.
The program is organized in conjunction with the non-profit group Witness for Peace, founded in 1983. They have organized research-based delegations to Cuba for the past three years, allowing educators, lawyers, health care professionals, and other key groups to travel to Cuba.
