Program Overview
This program features Spanish language, literature and cultural history, and is based at the University of Nebrija in Madrid, a city which has led Spain as the lively crossroads of Iberia since the Golden Age. In conjunction with the Nebrija summer program, faculty-led field trips in Madrid will include the incredible masterpieces of the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum, the Palacio Real, and historical walking tours throughout Madrid’s colorful neighborhoods. Also included are Full-day excursions to Toledo, whose Muslim, Jewish and Christian traditions made it a great center of religion and learning along with Segovia’s. An optional excursion may be added on to Salamanca, a thriving university town since the 15th century.
Faculty
Dr. Diana Guemárez-Cruz holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature from the University of Puerto Rico and both her M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. She is the department specialist in Contemporary Spanish Poetry with its connections to the European avant-garde. She has also published and publicly lectured on very important women writers, and published her first book of poetry in 2004. She is also a faculty member in the Latin American and Latino Studies and Women’s Studies programs. Professor Guemárez-Cruz is currently serving as the Graduate Advisor in Spanish.
Dr. Roger A. Zapata is a specialist in Latin American literature. He is a graduate of San Marcos University (Lima, Peru), University of Pittsburgh (M.A) and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D). He has published various books and articles on the Indian chronicler Guaman Poma de Ayala, the slave and Indian resistance to the conquest of America and Latin American authors such as Vargas Llosa, García Marquez, Rigoberta Menchú, and Mario Bellatin, among others. He has taught at the University of California at Davis, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, and the University of Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Zapata is preparing the manuscript for his new book "Transculturation and Peruvian Narrative". |

Accommodations and Meals
All undergraduate students will reside in single occupancy dormitory rooms with private baths in a modern air-conditioned dormitory in Madrid, convenient to the metro and bus stations. Daily meals in the cafeteria, linens, weekly laundry and cleaning services are included, and the dormitory has its own swimming pool and tennis court. Graduate students may choose the same housing or studio or shared one bedroom apartments with laundry facilities and efficiency kitchens for cooking. |
Estimated Program Costs:
Estimated $3,900 plus tuition and fees for six credits. This includes:
- Roundtrip airfare from New York
- All transfers in Spain to and from airports
- Single room with private bathroom in dorm, with pool
- Meals in cafeteria (three meals per day, seven days per week)
- Field trips and entrance fees in Madrid
- Two Full-Day trips and entrance fees in Toledo, Segovia or Salamanca
- Madrid metropass
- Pre-departure orientation at MSU
Program prices are based on 20 participants and current exchange rates and are subject to change. Fluctuations in currency exchange rate will be reflected in final payment. |

Application procedure and payment schedule:
All participants are required to have
1) a minimum GPA of 2.75;
2) an interview with one or both of the faculty leading that program;
3) a reference form completed by a faculty member other than the faculty
leading that program; and
4) a $100 non-refundable application fee.
Summer programs are open to non-MSU students and high achieving high school seniors who demonstrate special interest. Non-MSU students, new transfer students and high school seniors will need to submit two references forms, an official transcript from their home institution(s) and an additional $100 administration fee. |
