ITALIAN CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION - Montclair In Siena
July 22 – August 22,

Program Overview
This program includes
several days of faculty-led study tour followed by four weeks in the
medieval city of Siena. Students will visit historical sites in Rome with a
special focus on exploring the ancient world of the Etruscans, and the
medieval and Baroque periods. An excursion through the halls of the Vatican
Museum will give students a chance to go back to the origins and development
of Western Civilization. Participants will spend four days upon arrival
exploring northern Italy, including Bologna, Ferrar and Parma, and end the
program with two days in Rome. From their home base of Siena, students will
visit Florence and have the opportunity to explore the Tuscan countryside.
The program culminates with the Palio, the centuries-old horse race that
takes place twice a year in the heart of Siena.
Faculty
Dr. Vincenzo Bollettino is
a professor in the Spanish/Italian department at Montclair State University.
He received two Ph.D.’s from Rutgers University—one in Latin American
literature and the other in comparative literature. He has directed study
abroad program in his native Italy for more than 25 years. Dr. David Sanders, who received his Ph.D. from New York University, is an
associate professor in the Broadcasting Department. In addition to his
duties as producer of Inside MSU, the weekly campus television news program
and audio supervisor for Carpe Diem, the MSU Broadcasting Department's award
winning weekly cable show, Dr. Sanders teaches courses in television
production, audio production, multi-track recording, sound design, and music
technology. He has been the Director of the National Music Council since
1994. He produces the National Music Council's annual Leadership in Music
symposium and American Eagle Awards in New York City, and is the U.S.
representative to the International Music Council of UNESCO. Dr. Charles Feldman, who received his Ph.D. from New York University, is
responsible for the Food Management program at Montclair State University.
He has a strong background in food studies as well as food management and
operations. Dr. Feldman has an interest in food history and has produced a
number of articles and presentations on ancient “taste.” He is currently
working with an international food contractor on improving the quality of
hospital food and he is developing an ingredient resource center.
Accommodations and Meals
Students reside in double
occupancy rooms with private baths in a student dorm. Meals are not included
in Siena, although students may use the university cafeteria or the dorm
kitchens.

All students register for
Italian Study Abroad, which is a cultural history overview, and then select
one additional course in Italian language (at all levels), Italian or world
literature. All courses are taught in English, except Advanced Italian. The International Cuisine course is an introductory course focusing
on the social, cultural and historic messages behind the Italian heartland
meal. The course will primarily focus on the Tuscany region, giving
students a holistic understanding of how ingredients and food customs
develop into a cuisine. Students will first learn fundamental culinary
principles, participate in specialized excursions exploring small farms,
food producers and restaurants that are “off the beaten track. The Broadcasting course, Italian Media Journal is open to both
Broadcasting majors and non-majors. Students will research, write and
produce short videos on various aspects of Italian culture. They will explore
the Western European broadcast system to experience Italian culture through
its media. Students will train on video camcorders, learn simple production
techniques and then use the camcorders as a tool for research. For their
primary project, students will research a particular area and conduct
primary source research by interacting with people, doing interviews and
producing short video journals. Knowledge of television production is not
necessary.

Program Cost
$3,900 plus tuition
and fees for six credits. The price includes:
