International Institute: Montclair in Verona

Shakespeare in Italy
July 9-25, 2010 in Italy with pre-departure lectures in Montclair

Program Description
The University of Verona (Italy), in collaboration with Montclair State University,
is offering a summer institute exploring Shakespeare’s Italian plays.
Students will embark on a unique two week journey that will include intensive group studies of Shakespeare’s Italian plays: Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew with reference to The Merchant of Venice, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Othello.
Guest lectures by an array of international specialists-- notable Shakespearean scholars and acclaimed art historians from all over northern Italy-- will introduce exciting methods for reading and analyzing the texts while also exploring their artistic and historical contexts.
Students will be able to broaden their view of these classical works as theatre, as comparative English and Italian literature, and as Renaissance, European and Italian history. The course will be taught by Italian Shakespeare expert Dr. Rita Severi with MSU Theatre and Dance professor Susan Kerner, who leads the Montclair group
and will discuss the theatrical direction of Shakespeare’s play and direct students in
monologues and scenes from Shakespeare’s Italian plays.

Coupled with the courses are visits to the cities that are the background of Shakespeare’s Italian plays, with guided tours to Venice, Padua, and Mantua; some of the real locations mentioned by the Bard himself and figure prominently as settings. Participants will explore the actual locations of these plays while also examining the cultural and historical contexts that served as Shakespeare’s resources. They will attend Shakespearean performances and visit the beautiful museums and palaces of the region. During their stay in Verona, participants will also experience a night at the opera in the world-famous Arena and another two nights at the Roman Theatre during the Shakespeare Festival.
