2010 Program Cancelled

International Business Field Trip: Montclair in Austria
May 17- June 10 with travel June 6-13, 2010

Program Overview
This course will include class meetings on the Montclair State University campus from May 17 plus travel to Austria June 6-13. The program will include joint projects and guest lectures at Karl Franzens University and corporate visits in Graz, Austria Site visits will include international firms such as a chocolate manufacturers, financial services and automotive manufacturers, among others. Participants will arrange their own airfare and meet in Graz on June 6. The program ends with a full day guided visit to Vienna.

Faculty
Dr. Chandana Chakraborty is Professor of Economics and Chairperson for the department of International Business in the School of Business at Montclair State University.  She received her Ph.D. in Managerial Economics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and has taught at several other universities in the U.S. and at Delhi University in New Delhi, India. She has been a visiting faculty at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, India, and at Macquarie University, Division of Economic and Business Studies, in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Chakraborty’s research interests focus on productivity growth, technical change, international competition, foreign direct investment, economics of telecommunications, economic growth and development, and applied econometrics. She has published in Economics letters, Applied Economics, Economic Inquiry, Journal of Socio-economics, World Development, and International Journal of Management and Network Economics, and co-authored (with Romesh Diwan, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) High-Technology and International Competition, published in 1991 by Praeger Publishers.

Guest lecturers will be provided by faculty at the University of Graz on topics such as

  * European Union Trade Policy Making and Trends
  * The Evolving Role of Euro

  * New Challenges and Opportunities in EU, US relationship

Academics
All graduate students register with MSU for the following Summer Sessions 2010 course:
            INBS 550-72 International Business Study Abroad.
Prerequisites: INBS 501 and departmental approval. This course is designed to prepare students to succeed in the global business environment by providing direct contact with foreign firms and governmental agencies through an international travel experience. Students will have a focused encounter with managers and markets outside the U.S., enabling practice of inter-cultural and inter-personal skills in foreign settings and the consideration of alternative business norms. Examination of personnel practices, financial/accounting, retail, promotional, and marketing situations will enlarge perceptions of global business realities. Students will assimilate their travel encounters abroad through selected readings, cases, video tapes, and group discussions. May be repeated once for a maximum of 6.0 credits.

All undergraduate students register with MSU for the following Summer Sessions 2010 course:
INBS-380         GLOBAL FINANCIAL ENVIRONMENT

Prerequisites: INBS 346. Understanding how foreign exchange markets work and how that knowledge applies to international investing and financing decisions. Determination of exchange rates and exchange rate risk. Linkages between foreign exchange rates, interest rates and inflation rates. Operations of spot and forward currency markets. Hedging, speculation and arbitrage strategies using currency.
 

Accommodations and Meals
Participants will stay in centrally located hotels in double occupancy rooms with private bath. Breakfasts are included throughout.

Program Cost: $1,800
The program cost includes

    • 3 star hotels Graz and Vienna, double occupancy, continental breakfast  
    • All lectures and workshops
    • Corporate and cultural visits in Graz and Vienna
Program costs are based on 10 participants and current exchange rates and are subject to change. Single occupancy in the hotel available for an additional $250. Participants will meet in Graz on June 6 and depart from Vienna on June 13, and may wish to coordinate transatlantic airfare through the Global Education Center’s travel agency.
 

Application Procedure and Payment Schedule
Program application forms and one reference form should be sent to the Global Education Center with the non-refundable deposit at any time before April 1. Once accepted into the program, the payment schedule for program costs is as follows:
            Non-Refundable Deposit:       $ 100
            By April 1:                               $ 900  
            By May 1:                               $ 800
