Montclair in Madrid: International Business
Summer Pre-Session with travel dates May 21 - 30

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of international business, with site visits in the vibrant city of Madrid. It acquaints students with the fundamental principles of international business including such topics as globalization, international trade theories, the impact of culture, cross-national cooperation agreements, foreign exchange and capital markets, the strategy of international business, country evaluation and selection, modes of foreign market entry, the organization of international business, and management of international operations. Short case studies and/or research projects will be used to illustrate application of international business concepts and principles.

 

The one week international field trip to Madrid will feature corporate site visits such as the Madrid Stock Exchange and La Ciudad Finaciera del Banco Santander Central Hispano and guest lectures (in English) by faculty at Universidad de Nebrija. The program will also include a faculty-led half day walking tour of Madrid and a full day guided trip to the historical city of Toledo.

FACULTY:
Dr. Luis San Vicente Portes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Business at Montclair State University. He earned his bachelor's degree in Economics from the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (ITAM), and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Georgetown University. He has worked as a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank, as an advisor for non-tax revenue for the Mexican Ministry of Finance, and as an advisor for regulatory policy for Pemex, Mexico's state owned oil company. His research focuses on macroeconomics and international economics. Using computational techniques, he takes a theoretical approach in the study of business cycles, international trade and inequality.

Accommodations and Meals
Participants will stay in a centrally located Madrid hotel in double occupancy rooms with private bath. Breakfasts are included throughout.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:
All students register for the INSBS 346-xx, Introduction to International Business. Prerequisites: ECON 101 and 102; or ECON 302 (Business Minors).

Program costs are based on 15 participants and current exchange rates and are subject to change.

Application Procedure and Payment Schedule
The minimum GPA considered will be 2.75. All participants are required to have an interview with the faculty. Applications should include one reference form completed by a faculty member other than Dr. Portes, plus the $100 non-refundable deposit.
Once accepted into the program, the payment schedule for program costs is as follows:
Non-Refundable Deposit:        $ 100
Deposit by Jan. 15:                  $ 900
Deposit by Feb. 15:                 $ 650
Final Payment by March 15    $ 650 (final amount to be confirmed)
Make checks payable to “Montclair State University”.

This program is open to non-MSU students as Summer Sessions visiting students. Non-MSU students will need to provide an official transcript from their home institution and two references letters, plus an additional $100 administrative fee.
