What is Web Enrollment Services (WESS) for Students?

WESS is designed to provide students with a convenient method of reviewing course offerings, registering for courses, and accessing your schedules, grades and financial accounts. In addition, WESS is a tool used to enhance the advisement process and will allow students to constantly monitor their progress through their program of study through your "analysis of academic progress". Graduate students admitted to Montclair State University beginning in fall 2004 will be able to access their degree requirements through the WESS system. Students admitted prior to fall 2004 must continue to follow the degree requirements outlined on their paper work program.

WESS gives students access to the registration system, financial aid information, the course catalog and available course sections, as well as an array of student services.

What won't WESS do?

  • While the information provided through WESS is designed to enhance your understanding of your academic program and to assist you in your course selections, it does not replace advisement. You are still required to meet with your Graduate Program Coordinator within your first semester of graduate study.
  • Students are required to manually apply for Final Audit with the Registrar. Be sure to note Final Audit deadlines for graduation, as the submission due date is generally seven months prior to graduation.
  • Students are responsible for monitoring their records to ensure that they are meeting their program requirements.
  • Students are responsible for monitoring their account balance to ensure no holds will be made against your account.
  • Substitution forms must be obtained and approved by Graduate Program Coordinators, and subsequently approved by the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services.

How do I access WESS?

Simply log on to www.montclair.edu and chose WESS under Quick Links. Once you login you can select the topic(s) of interest to you. For example, Analysis of Academic Progress is an assessment of your program requirements and your current status as it relates to the completion of your degree.

Since WESS is a tool that you will use frequently throughout your studies, we recommend that you BOOKMARK the WESS login screen for your convenience and easy access.

Follow these steps for easy access to your personal Analysis of Academic Progress:
Go to:

  • Enter Student Services
  • Student Login
  • Select "Analysis of Academic Progress" under the heading "Student Records"
  • Select "Submit"

Your Personalized Degree Audit will be divided into the following sections:

Section 1 - Selected Student Data gives you an overview of your Graduate Student Data (personal identification and admission information), test scores and a summary of credit towards graduation, including grades for each class listed.

Section 2 - Academic Requirements Remaining gives you a breakdown of all of the requirements for your work program/area of study that you have not yet completed.

This section assumes successful completion of all course work currently in progress, which is listed in Section 3. Once you have satisfied (registered for, taken, or completed) requirements for courses in your work program, those courses will move from Section 2 to Section 3, indicating that you are meeting your program requirements.

Section 3 - Academic Requirements Completed or in Progress
This section shows how the courses that you have completed or that are in progress are applied to your academic requirements.

Section 4 - Work Not Applicable to this Program
Courses taken that do not satisfy a specific degree requirement will appear here. These courses may be appropriate for use in the degree program and may be eligible for substitutions.

All substitutions must be approved by the Graduate Program Coordinator and by the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services. If a substitution is approved, the course will be moved next to the class being substituted and removed from the “Work Not Applicable” section.
