Nutrition and Exercise Science Certificate ProgramChairperson in Exercise Science and Physical Education:Dr. Susana Juniu Chairperson in Health and Nutrition Sciences: Dr. Eva Goldfarb Graduate Coordinator in Exercise Science and Physical Education: Dr. Michele Fisher Graduate Coordinator in Health and Nutrition Sciences: Dr. Shahla Wunderlich The graduate certificate program in Nutrition and Exercise Science provides students the opportunity to gain knowledge in the closely related fields of nutrition and exercise science. The program is designed to develop and enhance competencies necessary for creating applied nutrition and exercise programs for clients interested in wellness and weight management. Both theoretical and practical approaches are emphasized throughout the program. Students are required to take two courses from each of the content areas and one elective, yielding a total of 15-16 semester hours. The certificate issued by Montclair State University signifies completion of the specified coursework. This program does not lead to a Master’s degree or “certification” in the respective fields of Nutrition and Exercise Science. However, students who apply for a Master’s degree program after completion of this certificate may transfer some coursework toward the degree. REQUIREMENTSRequired Core Courses (12 semester hours) Electives (3-4 semester hours) NUFD 501 Principles in Nutrition, 4 S.H. Total Semester Hours: 15-16 ADMISSIONStudents must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4-point scale. Applicants must also have evidence of previous coursework in anatomy and physiology, chemistry (including a lab), nutrition, and physiology of exercise. Students lacking adequate preparation may be required to take additional coursework at the undergraduate level as a prerequisite to entry in the certificate program. DEADLINESCredentials are processed as soon as they are received. This program does not have a specific deadline; however, the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services recommends that students submit their credentials as far in advance as possible for the semester they plan to begin their studies to ensure a timely review of their application.
