Initial Instructional CertificationArtMontclair State University’s Graduate Post-Baccalaureate Program – Art Education (POSTBAAE) is designed to offer students who already hold a bachelor’s degree the opportunity to prepare themselves for New Jersey initial instructional certification in art, K-12. The POSTBAAE curriculum prepares art teachers who will take an active role in comprehensive schooling, including the visual arts learning of all children for full participation in our democratic society. The College of the Arts (CART) is a state recognized center for excellence in the arts. The Center of Pedagogy (COP) is nationally recognized for its cutting-edge programs and approach to preparing teachers to be stewards of education in and for a democracy. Together, Montclair State University’s CART and COP prepare some of the best art teachers for our state’s K-12 schools. Art is an integral part of the school curriculum. Through their articulation of aesthetic curricula, art teachers facilitate the expressive production and thinking of their students, colleagues and surrounding communities. The goal of art teaching is to place visual arts inquiry in the center of students’ social lives. Art teachers help students understand and use art to shape meaning in their private and public lives. The POSTBAAE program includes pedagogical theory and practice that reflect those qualities and characteristics of a good teacher as expressed in “Portrait of a Teacher”. The program also includes studio and art history courses that introduce students to new artistic concepts and medial and encourage student to find and develop their own artistic concerns. Specifically designed and organized pedagogies in education and studio art lead students to explore ways they can begin to nurture the artistic “voices” of the young. Fieldwork experiences facilitate students’ acquisition of firsthand experiences with special needs and diverse student populations. Observations and work in real classrooms provide students with powerful cases of arts learning in schools that students bring to seminar and methods courses, linking theory and practice.
