Physical Science

Note: This program is for graduate degree candidates who are not certified in any field, and who wish to teach one of the following subjects: art, biological science, business education (no longer accepting new students), earth science, English, French, health, home economics, industrial arts/technology education, mathematics, music, physical education, physical science, social studies, or Spanish.

The course of study shown below represents the professional education course work required for students accepted to the program. Additional courses in the subject the candidate chooses to teach may be required. Candidates with strong academic backgrounds in that subject, as assessed by Montclair State University faculty, may have little of this additional course work.

Requirements
CURR 599, Curricular and Social Dynamics of Schooling, 2 credits
EDFD 520, Development of Educational Thought, 2 credits

One graduate course in the teaching of reading, 3 credits

One graduate course in the teaching for critical thinking

(Choose from):
CURR 551, Problem Solving and Critical Inquiry in Curriculum Development, 3 credits
CURR 409, EDFD 550, Critical Thinking and Learning, 3 credits
EDFD 409, READ 508, READ 409, Critical Thinking and Literacy, 3 credits

Departmental "methods" course(s) (in individual majors), 3-6 credits

CURR 500, Fieldwork in Education, 2 credits

Professional semester:
CURR 528, Teaching for Learning, 3 credits
CURR 511, Supervised Student Teaching, 8 credits
CURR 502, Seminar in Professional Education, 1 credits

Departmental Seminar (if required by major department), 1 credits

Minimum Semester Hours: 47


Candidates who have not already done so in their previous academic work, must be prepared to take courses to satisfy the following additional requirements: an introductory course in psychology, an educational psychology course, a course in human and intercultural relations,. They must also satisfy a speech proficiency requirement, a physiology/hygiene requirement, and pass the appropriate PRAXIS examination.

Important note: Candidates who wish to be general elementary teachers, special education teachers (teacher of the handicapped certification), or Teachers of English as a Second Language (TESL) should consult with the Teacher Education Admissions Office for courses of study for those programs.
