FRESHMAN YEAR/FIRST YEAR

Vincent, Dorothy, and Teresa Farrell Scholarship - Vincent Farrell of the class of 1932 was known nationally and internationally as an Olympic basketball official, a track official, and a navy man of the finest quality. As well as honoring Vincent, this scholarship also honors his wife Dorothy and mother Teresa. The recipient of the Vincent, Dorothy, and Teresa Farrell Scholarship demonstrates high academic achievement and active participation in department activities.

The Joseph Nerenberg '31 Award is dedicated to him for his lifeÐlong devotion to serving youth, and in recognition of his 60 years of service to the Red Cross. Mr. Nerenberg died in November of 1992, leaving a heritage of volunteer contributions that will never be forgotten.

The Panzer Alumni Scholarship is presented to a Freshman, woman, physical education major for highest scholastic average and evidence of professional competence.

Elvera De Muth Perkins Scholarship - Elvera Perkins a graduate of the class of '26 gives this award because of her love and respect for physical education and her desire to see high standards continue. The Elvera De Muth Perkins Scholarship is for a student majoring in physical education who gives evidence of promise for making positive contributions to the field of physical education.

SOPHOMORE YEAR/SECOND YEAR

The Margaret C. Brown Scholarship is donated by Robert Weston '47, to recognize the physical education sophomore who has the highest cumulative average and reflects some of Dr. Brown's professional ideals through leadership, service or participation in professional physical education activities on or off campus (i.e., conference, workshop, convention).

Gerald A. Garafola Scholarship - Mr. Gerald Garafola '24 was a colonel of the U.S. Air Force, and was director of physical education for the city of Newark for many years until his retirement. The Gerald A. Garafola Scholarship for distinguished contributions through participation and leadership in department activities and a grade point average of 2.8 or more.

Scott and Dorothea Harris Scholarship - Mr. Scott Harris was president of the Panzer College Board of Trustees, and with his skill managed a wonderful merger with Montclair State College. This scholarship in his and his wife's name was started some years ago, and is maintained by their children. The Scott and Dorothea Harris Scholarship is for scholastic achievement of at least 3.0, and a good citizen of the college and the community, and who gives promise of being a successful teacher of physical education.

The Margaret C. Brown Memorial Scholarship - This Scholarship was established by friends of Dr. Margaret C. Brown upon her death. In honor of Dr. Brown, this scholarship is awarded to a sophomore who is active in providing service to the community.

The Kathryn Eaton Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a sophomore or junior major in Physical Education, Teacher Education who exhibits professional excellence scholastically and in personal conduct. It is given by her friend Mrs. Stella T. Burton.

JUNIOR YEAR

Nicholas and Columbia Ciccone Scholarship Nicholas C. Ciccone,'21, was a physical education teacher of long standing in the city of Newark. The Ciccone Scholarship for a junior physical education major demonstrating skill in motivating the older adults to keep fit through movement activities.

A. J. Gorton Scholarship - Mr. Albert J. Gorton was Professor, Director of Athletics and coach of many sports at Panzer College. He was respected by the athletes, his professional associates, and members of the athletic community. This scholarship was set up in his memory. The A.J. Gorton Scholarship is for maintaining and demonstrating a high level of skill in physical education activities.

The Ethel Simpson Lenkowsky '37 Scholarship donated by her children is for a junior, physical education major who has attained an academic record of high quality.

Dean Martino Memorial Scholarship - Dean Martino 1978 was a member of the class of 1978. The class had a genuine fondness for each other and have remained good friends. When not long after graduation Dean died of cancer, his classmates set up this scholarship in his name. The Dean Martino Memorial Scholarship recognizes a junior physical education major who demonstrates a specific quality of Dean: a willingness to give of himself and his time to others.

Thomas Thomas Scholarships (TWO) - Thomas Thomas '47 is very active with community groups that support the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities. His interest in this area has led him to give the scholarship he does today. The Thomas Thomas Scholarships are for two students who have shown particular interest and skill in working with individuals who possess developmental disabilities.

Thelma Thompson Scholarship - Miss Thelma Thompson'58 sponsors the Measurement and Evaluation in Physical Education Scholarship that is presented to the junior physical education major with the highest grade and achievement in the measurement and evaluation course.

SENIOR YEAR

Margaret C. Brown Award, Sponsored by H. Krakower. Many of us were privileged to know Dr. Brown as an outstanding educator known across the country and in other nations as a progressive and creative leader in physical education. Many of you know her only as a portrait and as a special room for your study and quiet social use. It is fitting that this Senior Medal in her name be awarded for professional excellence.

The Jay B. Nash Award is sponsored by Dr. Leonard Lucenko and Dr. Rob Gilbert of the Department of Health Professions, Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies. This award is presented to a senior physical education and health major who has shown excellence in professional courses and in student teaching.

The Henry Panzer Medal is sponsored by Dr. Hazel Wacker, Professor Emeritus in honor of the President of Panzer College of Physical Education and Hygiene from 1920 to 1931. Panzer College was founded in 1917 by Randall D. Warden and Matthias Machery, Directors of Physical Education in the city of Newark. Mr. Warden continued to direct Panzer until 1920 when Mr. Panzer became President. This award is presented to honor creative teaching.

The Randall D. Warden Medal was established by Col. Gerald A. Garafola in honor of the coÐfounder of the Newark Normal School of Physical Education and Hygiene. This award is presented to recognize the senior with the highest scholastic achievement.

The Dr. Richard W. Tews Memorial Award presented to a senior student in teacher education who has demonstrated high academic achievement, reflected in a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and whose behavior reflects high ethical standards and exemplary professionalism in Physical Education.This Award is co-sponsored by Dr. Nancy Giardina and the Richard W. Tews MSU Foundation Scholarship Fund.
 
 

Giardina Award for Excellence in Pre-Service Teaching - This award is presented to a MAT candidate with a concentration in Physical Education or Health and Physical Education, who demonstrates excellence in pre-service teaching experiences, with a gpa of at least 3.0. This award is provided by Dr. Nancy M. Giardina and her family members in honor of her parents who instilled in the family the value of education in fostering personal growth.
 
 

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS YEAR NOT SPECIFIED

Paul Bogatko Scholarship - The late Paul Bogatko'22 was a teacher of Physical Education and Director of Athletics at East Side H.S. in Newark for over 40 years. The Paul Bogatko Scholarship is for a student who has graduated from a Newark Public High School and is a student in good standing.

Sue Fuller Memorial Scholarship - Sue Fuller Ð (1960) was known throughout the state as a fine woman and an excellent player in all phases of field hockey. At the time of her tragic death this scholarship was set up by her friends, associates, and her family. The Sue Fuller Memorial Scholarship is presented to a woman student for outstanding contributions through service to athletics (i.e., manager, publicity, statistician, etc.).

The Dr. Hazel M. Wacker Award is presented by the Panzer Student Association to a student for contributions made to physical education through service in the Panzer Student Association, and who has a cumulative average of 2.75 or more.

Dr. Richard W. Tews Award is also presented by the Panzer Student Association to a student for contributions to physical education through service in the Panzer Student Association, and who has a cumulative average of 2.75 or more.

The Panzer Student Service Award Ð is sponsored by Dr. Domenica Desiderioscioli, who was advisor and mentor to the Panzer Student Association from 1976 to 1985. This award is presented to a student, in good academic standing, who has given outstanding leadership and service to the department and the Panzer Student Association.

The Panzer Student Association Adapted Physical Education Awards (Four) Ð are presented to students who demonstrate exceptional service and qualities of leadership, understanding and creativity while fulfilling practicum assignments in the adapted area.

Elysia Philipp Scholarship - Elysia Philipp '32 was a teacher of physical education at Rahway H.S. and a guidance counselor. She touched the lives of many young people, and continues to do so through this fine scholarship. Elysia Philipp Scholarship Ð is given to a very capable student in the Department of Physical Education as determined by a Selection Committee.

Cathy Vayianos Coach's Award - Cathy Vayianos '61 was a basketball player of exceptional ability. She has been a successful coach and wants to help others who truly love sports. The Cathy Vayianos CoachÕs Award is for a woman who demonstrates leadership, team spirit, coach-ability and willingness to learn.

Sue Ritz Scholarship - Sue Nutes Ritz '25 is a retired teacher of physical Education with a genuine concern for the handicapped and disabled. The Sue Nutes Ritz Scholarship is for a junior or senior physical education student who demonstrates exceptional ability in working with handicapped students.

Rose Popkin Simon Scholarship - Mrs. Rose Popkin Simon '19 a graduate of the class of 1919 one of the first Panzer classes Ð is very artistic, and is known for her dance performance. The Rose Popkin Simon '19 Scholarship is for a physical education major who exhibits creativity and beauty of movement in some aspect of dance.

Harry Nowick Scholarship - Harry Nowick '49 was known and loved all over the state of NJ. His officiating of softball, basketball, and soccer was accurate and honest. His dear wife offers this scholarship in his name. The Harry Nowick Scholarship is presented to a male student majoring in Physical Education, who demonstrates an interest in soccer.

Ashley Hammond Scholarship - Ashley Hammond was the recipient of the 1994 Dr. Richard W. Tews Memorial Award. Mr. Hammond is a physical education teacher at Montclair Kimberly Academy and offers this scholarship to a female physical education major who demonstrates exceptional skill and interest in soccer. Mr.Hammond established this award in 1995.

The Judge Esther K. Untermann Award '22 is presented to a student for qualities of positive leadership and high cumulative average.

Joseph P. Ceres Scholarship - Joseph P. Ceres was a teacher of Physical Education in Newark, particularly interested in gymnastics. The Joseph P. Ceres Scholarship is for a sophomore or junior woman physical education major student who has shown exceptional ability and leadership in gymnastics.

CoderÐHorn Outstanding Student Athletic Trainer Award - This award is initiated by head athletic Trainer, Mr. John Davis from the Montclair State Athletic Department. The award is sponsored by Dr. Vincent McInerny team orthopedist and Dr. Joan SchleedeÐHorn of the Department of HPPERLS. The award is given in honor of the memories of Professor Al Coder and Professor George Horn. The award is presented to the student athletic trainer who exhibits excellence in the classroom and the training room.

Major Roger Palmisano Scholarship - The Roger M. Palmisano Lacrosse Award is presented by Major Roger M. Palmisano ('79) to a student in good academic standing (cumulative average at least 2.5) who demonstrates exceptional skill and interest in lacrosse.

The Betty Sommer Award is dedicated in her memory by her student Lynn Thompson GageÔ65,who was outstanding in movement education. The stipend is for "a teacher education major in the Movement Education course whose movement exemplifies the standard set by Mrs. Sommer for which she was nationally noted."

The George Horn Award is given to a male student in good academic standing with an interest in track and field, who demonstrates leadership, team spirit and a desire to make a positive contribution to society: qualities which exemplify "Dr. HornÕs ideals".

Nicholas and Columbia Ciccone Scholarship Nicholas C. Ciccone,'21, was a physical education teacher of long standing in the city of Newark. The Ciccone Scholarship is for a student who motivates the older adults to keep fit through movement activities.
 
 

RECREATION AND LEISURE STUDIES AWARDS

The Henry S. Curtis Leadership Award is sponsored by Dr. Jerry G. Dickason of the Department of HPPERLS Ð the award is presented to a recreation major who has demonstrated outstanding leadership ability in campus, departmental and professional organizations.

Fannie Honigfeld Scholarship - Fannie Honigfeld '02, has been an influential recreation leader in the city of Newark. Today men & women who were boys & girls under her care remember her and their playground days. The 1994 Fannie Diener Honigfeld Award is for effective leadership in department organizations and service to the department.

The Outstanding Recreation Graduate Award is sponsored by Dr. Susan A. Weston of the Department of HPPERLS. This award is given to the recreation major with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.25 or above, who is wellÐrounded in areas of leadership, competency, character, personality and who has participated in extracurricular and community service activities.

The Ruby and Carl Sayers Memorial Award is sponsored by Dr. Carla Tabourne of the Department of HPPERLS. This award is given to a student in therapeutic recreation who strives for excellence in the field, and has demonstrated this effort through exemplary volunteer work with special populations and has at least a 3.0 grade point average.

The Outstanding Commercial Recreation/Tourism Graduate Award is sponsored by Dr. Jack Samuels of the Department of HPPERLS. This award is given to a graduating senior for excellence in scholarship, coÐcurricular activities, work experiences and research projects. This award is given to honor Dr. Richard Kraus of Temple University.

The Elizabeth Fountaine Writing As Therapy Scholarship Sponsored by The Writing of Therapy Association, is given to a junior therapeutic recreation major who has good writing skills and is interested in using writing as a therapeutic modality.

The Panzer Trust Scholarship for Graduate Studies - This scholarship is presented to a Recreation and Leisure Studies major who has been accepted for graduate studies. The scholarship is presented by the Panzer Trust Committee.
 
 

HEALTH PROFESSIONS AWARDS

The John "Jack" Redd Scholarship was established upon his retirement to honor him for his dedicated service to Montclair State University. It is awarded to a junior or senior Health Education major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, who has demonstrated leadership skill in working/teaching in the health education area, and has served the department as a leader on committees and other areas of student involvement.
