Women's basketball defeats Lehman
The women's basketball team routed Lehman (N.Y.) College, 88-32, on Jan. 19 at Panzer Gymnasium. Freshman center Stephanie Machin paced Montclair with 19 points on the afternoon as the Red Hawks shut out the Lightning, 27-0, in the last 9:37 of play. MSU previously had lost its second consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Jan. 17, falling to Rowan University, 69-60. Machin led MSU with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and senior guard Vanessa DeFreitas added 12 points for the Red Hawks, who lost consecutive games for the first time all season. Montclair fell to The College of New Jersey, 73-60, on Jan. 14 as sophomore forward Ebony Allen led Montclair State with 18 points, while DeFreitas tallied 12 points and Machin collected 10 rebounds. The Red Hawks (11-3, 2-2 NJAC) will host William Paterson Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. before entertaining Richard Stockton College on Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. in a pair of conference contests.

Wigfall claims first in men's 200-meter dash at GBTC
Freshman Lance Wigfall finished first in the men's 200-meter dash finals in a time of 21.61 seconds at the 2004 Greater Boston Track Club Invitational held at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. on Jan. 18. Wigfall had earlier finished first in his preliminary bracket with a time of 21.98. MSU is scheduled to compete at the New York Elites on Jan. 23, at 9 a.m. in the Bronx.

Wrestling ties Wagner, falls to Army
Montclair State, ranked eighth in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, fell to 6-3-1 on the season in dual matches in a tri-match on Jan. 18, in Staten Island. MSU fashioned a 21-21 tie against host Wagner and a 34-12 loss to Division I opponent Army, which also defeated Wagner, 40-0. The host Seahawks took an 18-0 lead over Montclair before the Red Hawks made a comeback, winning the last five matches of the bout to forge the tie. Senior Dominic Dellagatta scored a 17-2 tech fall at 165 pounds, before Wagner forfeited the 174-pound match. Sophomore Jake Beitz earned a 7-2 decision at 184 pounds and senior Dennis Gaul had an 18-6 decision at 197 pounds before junior transfer Daniel DeJesus won by a 3-2 decision at heavyweight. Dellagatta (6-2 decision), Beitz (fall 2:15) and Gaul (4-2 decision) recorded the Red Hawk victories against Army. MSU will next host archrival and fourth-ranked The College of New Jersey on Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at Panzer Gymnasium.

Swimming falls to Rowan; men top Misericordia
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept in a dual meet against Rowan University at Panzer Pool on Jan. 17. The men lost, 120-87, to fall to 2-5 overall on the season, while the MSU women (0-8 overall) came up on the short end of a 121-86 result. Junior Eric Loree took second place in the men’s one-meter dive (120.55) and third in the three-meter (138.90), while senior Monique Fallaha was runner-up in the same women's diving events with scores of 105.45 and 145.70, respectively. MSU split with College Misericordia (Pa.) at Panzer Pool on Jan. 14 as the men won, 105-70, while the women fell to the visiting Cougars by just one point, 102-101. Junior Shane Schwarz finished first in the men's 200 fly, recording a time of 2:05.88 minutes, and also took first in the men's 500 free in 5:24.97. Senior Danielle Florio took first place in the women's 1000 free, finishing in 12:11.97 minutes, and also took the women's 200 fly in 2:31.49. Classmate Colleen Griffin was first in the women's 50 free, registering a time of 26.28 seconds, and also won the women's 100 free in 57.67 seconds. Both Red Hawk teams return to action at Drew University on Jan. 27.

Men's basketball swept by TCNJ and Rowan
Men's basketball came up short for the fourth straight game, falling at Rowan University on Jan. 17 by a 62-56 count in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest in Glassboro. Junior forward Duquan Everett paced MSU (7-6, 0-4 NJAC) with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, while teammate Lamont Newell added 16 points for the Red Hawks. Everett scored 34 points and had 10 rebounds in MSU's 73-63 loss at The College of New Jersey on Jan. 14 in Ewing. The Red Hawks host William Paterson on Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. at Panzer Gymnasium before entertaining Richard Stockton College on Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. in a pair of conference contests.
