MSU lauded by second Hispanic organization
Saludos Hispanos/Saludos.com, a career and education site and magazine for bilingual Hispanics, has presented its 2001 Educators of Distinction award to Montclair State University and named MSU one of the "100 Best U.S. Universities for Hispanics."

According to a citation presented to the University, MSU received the award for “its commitment to higher education success for the Hispanic community.

"Education is the key that opens the door to achievement for today’s Hispanic. We congratulate you for leading the way, providing high standards of education, career planning and counseling to serve your Hispanic students," the citation says.

This marks the second time in two months MSU has been labeled an educational leader by a prominent Hispanic national higher education magazine. In November, Montclair State was selected as a "Publisher's Pick" by Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine.

"We are proud of the cultural richness and diversity of the Montclair State University community," said President Susan A. Cole. "New Jersey's Hispanic community is rapidly growing and seeking the very best in higher education. We are honored to be an important educational resource for this vital population."

Saludos Hispanos is a 30-year-old organization dedicated to increasing opportunities for Hispanic people through education and career development. Its Web site was one of 50 selected as the "Best of the Best" among 4,000 sites reviewed by CareerXroads.

Rosemarie Garcia-Solomon, publisher of Saludos Hispanos/Saludos.com, said, "We realize that a commitment to Hispanic success in higher education takes determination. It’s a process that must start at the top and work down to each person in your organization...For an educational institution, reaching and effectively serving this community is a challenge that you have answered in a most positive way."

Bang on a Can arrives Feb. 8
The world renowned Bang on a Can All-Stars will bring their unique style of musical exploration to Memorial Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m.

Bang on a Can will be joined by music impresario Don Byron, who has been voted best clarinetist by critics and readers in leading international music journals. He was named "Jazz Artist of the Year" by Down Beat magazine and has been an integral part of the New York cultural community for more than a decade. Also joining the All-Stars with a new composition is leading Burmese musician/composer Kyaw Kyaw Naing.

Part classical ensemble, part rock band, part jazz sextet, Bang on a Can creates fresh, vivid and ground-breaking music. It crosses genres and discards categorizations. Out of the energy and excitement of the Bang on a Can Festival, six of the most brilliant and provocative performers in America have come together -- performers who are adventurous, virtuosic, dynamic and intense, who are equally at home in all the diverse styles that exist within music today. The All-Stars bring an unparalleled combination of precision and improvisation to this intersection of genres.

The instrumentation of the Bang on a Can All-Stars is unique: clarinets and saxophones, electric guitar, cello, bass, keyboards, percussion. The All-Stars have a flexibility that doesn't fit into any recognizable category. Each concert is an eclectic supermix.

Come hear the wonder that led the Washington Post to declare, "Both the players and their works on this program were amazing just to be in the same room with…the sounds they make, by turns ominous, joyous, intricate and triumphant, are extraordinary."

Tickets are $20. Call the MSU Box Office at 973-655-5112.
