Montclair State battles the
BLIZZARD OF '03

Gov. James E. McGreevey wasn't the only one who swung into action Sunday when he declared a state of emergency to prepare citizens for what weather officials called one of the worst storms of the century. Montclair State's Physical Plant crews worked around the clock to dig the campus out of more than two feet of snow. At 4 p.m. Wednesday Jeff Solowski (above), who had been working since 3 p.m. Sunday, uses the chance to pose for a photo as an opportunity to take a short break.

Crews work around the clock to stay on top of storm
Working around the clock, crews from Physical Plant fought what seemed to be a losing battle -- keeping up with snow removal. (Full Story and Photo)

More than a shovel needed for this winter pile-up
It took heavy artillery to fight the blizzard, including plow trucks, tractors with plows and spreaders, snow blowers, front-end loaders, backhoes, salt spreaders and more. A crew of 22 workers concentrated on the roads, lots and sidewalks while another 24 used good old-fashioned metal shovels to clear the steps, building entrances, ramps and handicap cut curbs. Snow day! Students enjoy two days of wintery fun
Montclair State students took advantage of two days of canceled classes to catch up on their studies. Not buying it, huh? OK, odds are most students may not have had their heads buried in their textbooks during the entire blizzard. And who can blame them? It just takes those two familiar words -- Snow Day -- to blast even the most academic-minded student back to elementary school, when hearing your school on the "closed" list meant a free ticket to a day of lounging in pajamas, building snowmen and endless hot chocolate.
