Charitable Campaign contributions hit record highs
Seventy-five non-profit organizations from throughout New Jersey will benefit from a record level of participation and donations from MSU employees in the 2004 MSU Employee Charitable Campaign.

"The number of employees who made contributions during 2004 increased 40 percent over the 2003 campaign," said Gilbert Rivera of Employee Relations. "Total donations also increased by nearly 40 percent, to $8,219 from $5,895 in 2003."

The MSU Employee Campaign Committee is chaired by Judith Lin Hunt of Sprague Library, and includes Christina Molinari representing CWA, Luis Rosario representing Local 195, Lt. Michael Potaski representing uniformed officers, Reginald Ross of Student Development and Campus Life, Kristie O'Neill of the Division of Administration, and Lynarkah Montique and Rivera of the Human Resources Division.


SD&CL staffers recognized for achievements
Student Development and Campus Life (SD&CL) recently held its Red Ribbon Awards Ceremony for the fall semester. The awards are presented to recognize employees for their outstanding performance, special accomplishments and contributions to the campus community.

"The Division's Mission Statement sets the standard for what we do and the recognition awards are designed to provide a mechanism for recognition of those individuals who excel in meeting this standard,"said SD&CL Vice President Karen Pennington.

The Vice President's Award recognizes staff members who have made distinctive contributions to the Division and students. The recipients for the fall were Mary Murphy of Admissions, Donna Barry of the Health and Wellness Center, and Jamal Shahin of Academic Development and Assessment.

The Teamwork Award recognizes groups of staff who foster cooperation, collaboration and open communication, and whose teamwork on a project or significant effort advances departmental goals and/or the University’s mission. Awards went to Elaine Stevens of Admissions and the following members of Residence Life: Regina Sargent, Carlyle Lawrence, Theresa Giardino, Phyllis Nardelli, Christopher Kuretich, Robert Garrett, P. Kristin Lelli, Arian Bryant, Andrew Voshell, Deborah Clogher, Dolores Lyach, Stacy McConnell, Patricia Tangora, Lucille Henry, Barbara Pennisi and Patricia Murray.

The Random Act of Kindness Award recognizes staff members who have performed a random act of kindness that has had a positive impact on the lives of co-workers, students, visitors or the community. The award went to Gennae Hinson of Admissions.



Vendor Fair to be held March 30
The 2004 Vendor Fair, sponsored by Procurement Services, will be held Tuesday, March 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms.

"The University is commited to using qualified suppliers from all facets of the business community," said Tony Mejido, director of Procurement Services. "The Vendor Fair gives members of the campus community the opportunity to meet vendors who provide the products and/or services that we use regularly."

The Vendor Fair also is open to other organizations in higher education, local, county and state government, as well as corporate representatives.

NJCUE seeks teachers
The New Jersey Consortium for Urban Education (NJCUE) is recruiting teachers for its second year.

"After a successful recruitment effort in 2003, NJCUE is seeking applications from recent college graduates and mid-career adults for an accelerated pathway to certification in math, science and special education," said Cynthia Onore of Curriculum and Teaching.

NJCUE is a unique collaboration among regional universities, including Montclair State, Kean,William Paterson and New Jersey City universities, and the school districts of Newark, Paterson and Jersey City.

Successful applicants will participate in an eight-week summer preparation program, and receive a stipend for supervised student teaching in an urban summer school, a full-time paid teaching position beginning in September and free graduate tuition leading to certification. A three-year commitment to teaching in a high-need urban district is required.

Board News

At its Feb. 19 meeting, the Montclair State Board of Trustees approved a new master of arts in child advocacy and the conversion of the graduate concentration in nutrition and food science to full master's degree status with a change in degree designation from master of arts to master of science. Both are effective this fall.

The board also authorized the awarding of several contracts including construction management services for the new academic building to TDX Construction Corporation and construction of the Children's Center to Terminal Construction Corp.

The following personnel actions were approved: three faculty appointments, six professional/managerial staff appointments, 37 faculty reappointments, 71 professional staff reappointments, 18 faculty sabbaticals, and two leaves of absence without pay.


Library offers classes for students
Sprague Library's Reference Department is offering library instruction classes for all students, Monday through Saturday, day and evening.

Classes will familiarize students with the library and help them with specific reference and research assignments. Classes will include the location of materials, use of the Sprague Library Catalog, use of appropriate print and electronic resources, how to access these electronic resources from off campus, evaluation and use of Internet sources and any other topics faculty would like to include.

All College Writing I classes will be taught in the new McKenzie Online Classroom on the second floor, where students will have hands-on experience searching the Catalog, electronic resources and other information available from the library's home page.
