Montclair State senior Shane Schwarz helps first graders at School 9 in Clifton with a measuring exercise during the district's Science Day Fair on March 11. Approximately 60 MSU students enrolled in the Problem Solving in Math, Science and Technology course created Science Learning Centers at the school to show the elementary school children hands-on science activities. Vince Walencik of Curriculum and Teaching and Sumi Hagiwara of Early Childhood, Elementary and Literacy Education teach the Problem Solving course at MSU. "This gave our students the experience of working with young children and the opportunity to see how what they are doing is relevant in the schools," Walencik said. Former NSF director to deliver Sokol Lecture, 3/31
Microbiologist Rita Colwell, director of the National Science Foundation from 1998 until last month, will deliver the Margaret and Herman Sokol Science Lecture on Wednesday, March 31, at 8 p.m. Colwell left the NSF to become the first chair of newly created Canon U.S. Life Sciences, Inc., a Washington-based think tank whose goal is to identify and develop life-science solutions with potential applications in diagnostics and medical instrumentation. Student to appear on TV's 'Whoopi'
Junior theater major Malachy Orozco seems cool, calm and collected, considering he's going to be on television for the first time. Orozco was hand-picked by Whoopi Goldberg to audition for her prime time NBC television show. (Full Story and Photo)

Annual dinner recognizes student achievement and diversity

This year's annual dinner will showcase the many talents of Montclair State students, celebrating their diversity and variety of accomplishments in all areas of campus life. (Full Story)

Graduate student wins NOAA research fellowship
Jennifer Haag, a first-year graduate student in Earth and Environmental Studies, won a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The $28,572 award will allow Haag to investigate atmospheric nitrogen deposition and its impact on coastal eutrophication, focusing on the Mullica River--Great Bay ecosystem located near the Jacques Cousteau Reserve in the southern part of the state. Global Images 2004
David Witten of Music is the winner of this year's Global Images competition and exhibit, which features 55 photographs taken in 23 countries by 22 faculty and staff members. Witten won for his photograph "Refreshing Moment at Lake Sevan" taken in Armenia. (Full Story and Photo)

 

A trip down Memory Lane...

This group of hard-working students made up the staff of the MSU 1930 yearbook, "La Campanilla" at New Jersey State Teachers College at Montclair, where Harry Sprague served as president. The first page of the 175-page book reads, "Enter to Learn." The last page, "Depart to Serve."
