Ben Schaffer of Health Professions, Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies, his wife Barbara (right) and student Wendy Flomerfelt hold a quilt made by students in the fall 2001 Recreation Leadership class in conjunction with the Recreation Club in response to Sept. 11. Students created their own designs on 9-inch panels. Barbara, a '95 graduate of the fine arts program and master quilter, assembled the quilt, which will be displayed at various locations throughout campus. Flomerfelt, a commercial recreation and leisure and tourism major, chaired the class project.

Graduate student's research bridges
two colleges in interdisciplinary venture

The ability to apply problem solving and basic research to human disease is what Jeffrey Toney loves most about science. Imagine how eager Toney is to become part of the College of Education and Human Services and the College of Science and Mathematics' first venture in interdisciplinary research. (Full Story)

MSU becomes first U.S. university to send
students to Moscow Conservatory

Next spring, several lucky music students will get the opportunity of a lifetime to study at the renowned Moscow Conservatory in Russia. Montclair State expects to sign an agreement with the Conservatory that would allow students to spend up to a year studying at one of the best music schools in the world, making it the first university in the United States to have this type of exchange program with the Conservatory. New doctoral program is first of its kind
Montclair State will welcome its first students in the new doctoral program in environmental management this fall. Approved this month by the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education, the doctoral program is unlike any other in the state because of its strong interdisciplinary and problem-solving approach to environmental management. Design for Children's Center complete;
groundbreaking set for summer

There's a project that's been quietly making its way to the construction forefront--but it won't be quiet much longer. The new Children's Center will be filled with squeals of delight from the 500 youngsters who will occupy the state-of-the-art facility when it opens in September 2004. (Full Story and Rendering)

Course teaches students how to watch TV
with a critical eye

According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than four hours of television each day. Do the math and you'll come up with 28 hours a week, or two months of nonstop television watching per year. As Nielsen puts it, a 65-year-old will have spent nine years glued to the tube. Anyone who spends that much time doing something certainly must know how to do it. Not necessarily. (Full Story and Photo)
