Center for Academic Development
and Assessment receives certification
The Center for Academic Development and Assessment (CADA), which provides
individual and group sessions on study strategies and learning techniques
as well as individual and group tutorial sessions in a variety of academic
areas, was certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)
as a Tutorial Center. This certification allows CADA to issue CRLA certificates
to qualified individual tutors at level I and/or level II; to offer CADA
tutors the opportunity to receive recognition and positive reinforcement
from an international association and to stimulate collaboration from
other campus programs. In addition, the recognition will help CADA to
establish contact and work in collaboration with other CRLA tutor certified
programs to get insight on the latest strategies and techniques in tutor
training and development; set up appropriate standards for the minimum
skills and training a tutor needs to be successful; organize a coherent
curriculum; and enhance CADA's guidelines to guarantee best services to
tutors and students.
Emergency Medical Services receives top award
MSU's Emergency Medical Services received the Striving for Excellence
Award by the National Collegiate EMS Foundation at its annual conference
in Philadelphia. Of the 73 member colleges and universities, Montclair
State's EMS was one of eight schools recognized. Candidates for this award
are evaluated based on a review of quality factors in EMS operations including
the delivery of care, training and continuing education of employees and
volunteers and service to the community. The intent of the award is to
recognize quality campus EMS organizations as examples to other schools
that are starting or developing EMS programs. "This recognition is
truly a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our student volunteers,"
said Robb Rehberg, chief of Emergency Services.
Softball team records two no-hitters
The Montclair State softball team last week recorded two no-hitters during
its eight-game slate at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The
two outstanding efforts helped MSU get its season off on the right foot
as Montclair won seven of the eight games it played in the Sunshine State.
The first of the no-hitters took place in the second game of the series
on March 12 as freshman Dana Warnock made her first start in a Red Hawks
uniform a memorable one as she threw her first career no-hitter and the
24th in the history of the program in a 12-0 victory over St. Joseph's
College (Maine). Warnock struck out five and walked one batter as she
faced just one hitter over the minimum. MSU's second no-hitter of the
week came on its final day from junior Athanasia Totoaro, who blanked
seventh-ranked Wheaton (Mass.), 3-0. Totaro struck out six in her second
career no-hitter.
Last year, the Red Hawks recorded three no-hitters, including a perfect
game by Crystal Sweeney. Montclair State has never had more than three
no-hitters in one season.
