Murray L. Cole, a former chair of the MSU Board of Trustees and one of New Jersey's most distinguished lawyers, is being honored at the University's 2005 commencement ceremony with an honorary Doctor of Laws. As chair of the Board of Trustees for 10 years and a member for 23 years, Cole was instrumental in enabling MSU to become the second-largest public education institution in New Jersey. His leadership skills played a pivotal role in supporting the University's mission to provide exceptional higher educational opportunities for the state's college-bound students. Upon Cole's retirement in December, the MSU Board of Trustees awarded him a Resolution of Appreciation for his contributions. During his tenure on the Board, Cole served on the Personnel, Academic Program Planning, Executive, Appeals, Facilities and Investment committees. He currently serves as a member of the MSU Foundation Board of Trustees, and has made significant financial contributions to the University. After graduating from Williams College in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in political science, Cole earned a J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1948. A Ridgewood resident and distinguished lawyer for more than 50 years, he was awarded the N.J. State Bar Foundation's Medal of Honor in 1997. In addition, Cole has served as an Honorary Trustee of the Passaic County Bar Association, Supreme Court Advisory Committee to the New Jersey State Bar Lawyers' Assistance Committee, Honorary Trustee of Passaic Valley Givers Fund, and a member of the American Bar Foundation. He is listed in Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in Financing and Industry. Cole has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America since 1934, serving on the Honorary Board, Northeast Region; Executive Board, Passaic Valley Council; and National Advisory Board, as well and was awarded the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Eagle Scout in 1976. He has also been affiliated with the Reserve Officers Association of the U.S. serving as a member of the National Naval Affairs Subcommittee, Assistant Judge Advocate General for New Jersey, and vice president of the Passaic-Bergen chapter. Cole served as a director for a number of New Jersey corporations that include Treadway Companies and United Jersey Bank. His leadership roles with charities include serving as director of the American Red Cross Paterson Chapter and Trustee for the Daughters of Miriam Home and Infirmary for the Aged. |
