Actor Alec Baldwin stressed the importance of community when he addressed Montclair State's class of 2004 at commencement at the Continental Airlines Arena. Baldwin, who has made New York his home since 1986, said the Big Apple is more than a place where his friends live, his favorite restaurants are and where he admires the architecture. "It is a home to me," he said. "It is a place I made a commitment to; a place where I am counted on to participate in affairs in the community."

Baldwin urged graduates to do the same. "The greatest thing you can do in your life is to give a piece of yourself, and a piece of your own heart and soul to the people and the institutions and the culture of where you wind up calling home.

"[Montclair State] has been your home for the past few years," he added. "When you leave, remember that there is a place out there waiting for you--a city or town that needs your talents and efforts."
