Members of the campus community are invited to remember Jesse James Young and celebrate his 34 years at Montclair State on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms. Young passed away last spring at age 56. Those wishing to contribute to a scholarship established in Young's memory can do so by sending a check made to the Montclair State University Foundation. The check should be accompanied by a note indicating that the money go toward the Jesse J. Young Scholarship.

Several merchants in the Upper Montclair business district are offering discounts to faculty, staff and students during the month of September. Receive a free can of soda with the purchase of a sandwich from Uptown Deli, a 10-percent discount on local deliveries from Smith's Flowers, or a 10-percent discount on your purchase at Hip Chic. Merchants offering discounts will display a Montclair State Red Hawk card in their store window. A complete list of stores is available in the lobby of the Student Center or from the Office of Community Relations and Special Events, College Hall, Room 311A.

Dorothy Rogers, associate dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, has been named director of General Education. Her responsibilities will include general administration of the program, continuing implementation of the core program and development of the assessment component that was included in the proposal approved by the faculty.

Information Technology is providing Blackboard specialists through Sept. 12 to answer questions regarding the use of Blackboard. A Blackboard "Doctor Is In" table will be located in the lobbies of Partridge Hall, the Student Center, Dickson Hall, Sprague Library and Richardson Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Instructor and student manuals are available at the Office of the Dean in each school; Finley Hall, Room 111; and Sprague Library, as well as online.

The men's and women's swim teams are sponsoring a five-session swimming lesson program for children ages 4-12. The Wednesday session begins Sept. 10 and ends Oct. 8. Two time slots are available: 4-4:30 p.m. or 4:40-5:10 p.m. The Friday session begins Sept. 12 and ends Oct. 10. Time slots are 3:45-4:15 p.m. or 4:30-5 p.m. Cost is $50; $40 for faculty, staff and alumni. Caddo Design & Office Products has been selected as the University's primary vendor for office supplies. The Just-In-Time Stockless Inventory program provides next-day office delivery, Web-based ordering and summary billing. The stock room continues to supply copy paper, toner, MSU envelopes and exam booklets, but no longer stocks other office supplies. To establish an account, call Christine Palma, assistant director of Procurement Services (formerly known as Purchasing), at 973-655-4423.

Team leaders for three Human Resources improvement projects have been named: Joanne Wale, Leaves of Absence; Marc Semler, Position Management; and Carole Lange, Temporary Service/Limited Duration Employment. More information about these initiatives will be available in upcoming issues of INSIGHT Online.

Six students received $500 AFT-Local 1904 Keenan/Moore/Uhia/Waller Scholarships for 2003. They are Jason Boulware, biology; Kamila Gladysz, international studies/criminal justice; Yarixa Gomez, Spanish; Cindy Koorie, human ecology; Jason Neils, biology; and Rosemary Topar, music performance.

The Center for Professional and Continuing Education
closed on June 30 due to budget cuts. The non-credit English as a Second Language Program will continue to operate under the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
