Montclair State's campus can be rather confusing to newly enrolled freshman students who do not know the lay of the land. In order to ease their anxiety, information booths, dubbed "Lucy Booths," were set up around campus. Karen Pennington, vice president for Student Development and Campus Life, who had seen something similar at a conference, thought the booths would benefit the new crop of students. From September 7 to September 13, five booths were set-up around campus at Blanton Hall, College Hall, Dickson Hall, the Student Center and in front of Sprague Library. The booths were built by Lt. Michael Postaski of University Police, and were open for questions from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Julie Fleming, evening and weekend programmer for the Department of Student Activities, said, "We wanted to have a visible place for students who needed help getting around campus. It was a tremendous success, and we had more than 3,000 people stop by the booths." "The majority of questions that I was asked were for directions to buildings on MSU’s campus, especially for Financial Aid and the Bursar’s Office," said Melissa Merced, a first year counselor and volunteer from the Office of New Student Experience. The Lucy Booths, which got their title from the Peanuts comic strip, were staffed by volunteers from departments such as Student Development and Campus Life, Peer Leaders and Admissions Ambassadors. |
