Marie Cascarano of Wellness Education received $12,000 from the
New Jersey Higher Education Consortium/Rowan University to create a campus-wide
alcohol awareness campaign based on the Social Norms Theory, which relies
on the fact that much of peer influence is based upon the correct perception
of attitudes and behaviors. The campaign proposes to accurately present
drinking behaviors.
Jonathan Caspi of Human Ecology had his book, Educational Supervision
in Social Work, published by Columbia University Press. The book presents
the first empirically developed model for supervision of social work staff
and students in internships. Released internationally, the book has been
purchased by libraries, schools of social work and individuals in the
United States as well as France, China, England and Israel.
Nicole Cooke of Sprague Library recently participated in the Association
of College and Research Libraries' Annual Immersion Program held at the
University of Rhode Island, Kingston. This competitive program provided
training to 90 librarians from around the country, Canada and Barbados.
The Immersion Program is designed to provide intensive information literacy
training and education for instruction librarians. The institute is taught
by faculty of nationally recognized librarians and strives to create an
environment that fosters group interaction and active participation.
Fire Safety Compliance Coordinator Robert Ferrara was named American
Legion Firefighter of the Year for the township of Lyndhurst, Bergen County
American Legion Firefighter of the Year and American Legion Firefighter
of the Year for the state of New Jersey. He was presented the state award
at the 85th Annual State American Legion Convention in Wildwood in June.
Eileen Fitzpatrick of Linguistics received $20,000 from Linguistech
Consortium Inc. to fund a program that will allow linguistic students
to participate in the investigation of linguistics markers that characterize
deceptive statements in testimony. The students will annotate these markers
in known deceptive testimony and participate in the development of a tool
to rank the probability of new testimony being deceptive.
Philip LeBel of Business conducted project management training workshops
in French to mid-level professionals from a dozen countries in Sub-Saharan
Africa. The training took place at Illinois State University in Bloomington
and in Takoma Park, Md. Topics included the economic and financial evaluation
of projects, sustainability of projects, and decentralization and management
of the public sector under conditions of risk.
Sue Weston of Health Professions, Physical Education, Recreation and
Leisure Studies is one of the first students to graduate from the Glass
Arts Program at Davidow Performing Arts Theater.
