Symposium on post-9/11 Air Quality and Human Health Effects Held Today

Leading New York and New Jersey scientists will review their initial research findings on post-9/11 air quality and health effects at a Montclair State University symposium. MSU will be holding this special symposium in Richardson Hall today from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Sponsored by the University's College of Science and Mathematics, the symposium is designed to present one of the first comprehensive looks at post-9/11 environmental and human health effects research--including what has been learned and what additional studies are underway. The panelists include:

Dr. Sally Ann Lederman, director of WTC Pregnancy Study at the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health, will discuss her work studying the effects on birth outcomes and on later child development of acute maternal exposure to air pollutants emitted during the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11.

Dr. David J. Prezant, deputy chief medical officer, Fire Department of New York and professor of medicine, Pulmonary Division, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, will address the topic of health consequences in WTC rescue workers.

Dr. Paul Lioy, professor and vice chair, Department of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, will present research findings centered on exposure to air pollutants emitted in the aftermath of 9/11 and implications for public health.

Dr. John Taylor, director of MSU's doctoral program in Environmental Management and professor of earth and environmental studies, will discuss global climate change and human health.
