Homecoming 2002 puts Montclair State on Broadway
The College Life Union Board (CLUB) is putting Montclair State on Broadway for this year's Homecoming festivities, Oct. 14-Oct. 20.

The annual Homecoming parade and football game will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. For the best view, bring a blanket and claim a piece of lawn in front of the Bond House. For those who'd rather watch a sporting event, head over to Sprague Field at 11 a.m. to watch the women's soccer team take on Kean.

A pre-football barbecue and tailgating will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Lot 7 to get fans ready to watch the Red Hawks take on William Paterson at 4 p.m. at Sprague Field. And don't miss the half-time show to find out the float winners and who will be named this year's king and queen.

Following the game, head over to the Blanton/Bohn quad for some music at a concert sponsored by Class I Concerts.

Homecoming fun, however, will take place throughout the entire week. On Monday, Oct. 14, head to the Student Center, Cafe C, for a psychic fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Maybe you can find out who will win the football game! The King and Queen Pageant will take place later that night, from 7-10 p.m., in the Student Center Ballrooms.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, from noon to 2 p.m., radio station WKTU will be in the Student Center quad, where recreation lawn games will be going on throughout the day. At 8 p.m., the Student Center Ballrooms will be the place for good, clean fun with foam party that includes music and dancing.

The annual bonfire and pep rally will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 16, beginning at 8:30 p.m. in Lot 25. But students shouldn't stay out too late because high-tech paint ball will begin Thursday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms. Radio station Z100 will be in the Student Center quad from noon to 2 p.m.

Float building will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in Lot 22.

Leave enough energy after Saturday's events to see the musical "Into the Woods" on Broadway on Sunday, Oct. 20. Tickets are $30 for students; $45 for faculty and staff. For more information about Homecoming or for show tickets, call CLUB at 973-655-5232.

Student is first to successfully
defend dissertation proposal

Louise Ferreira laughs with a soft Brazilian accent when it is suggested she has become part of two historical firsts at Montclair State University.

"I hadn't thought of it that way but it's true, I suppose," she said. "The Ed.D. curriculum in pedagogy is the University's first doctoral program, and mine was the first successful dissertation proposal."

Housed in the Center of Pedagogy, the doctoral offering, under the direction of Cynthia Onore, offers specializations in mathematics education and philosophy for children. Created for students with master's degrees, the program is characterized by a strong theoretical base and focused on core curriculum content standards.

As a candidate in the philosophy for children specialization, Ferreira focuses on science education. Her proposal, "Philosophy for Children and Science Education: How a Philosophy for Children Science-Inspired Curriculum Helps a Class of Fifth Graders to Learn Basic Science Process Skills," was successfully defended May 7. She received the 2002 Albert Wang Dissertation Award, a $2,000 grant to help fund research for her dissertation.

Fleet Card Services CFO elected
MSU Foundation chair

Paul V. Stahlin '74, chief financial officer of Fleet Card Credit Services, has been elected chair of the Board of Trustees of the Montclair State University Foundation.

"Paul's financial expertise, community involvement and dedication to Montclair State make him the ideal foundation chair," said Greg Waters, vice president for University Advancement. "Under his strong leadership, the Foundation will surely prosper."

The Foundation, created in 1960 by alumni and friends to provide financial support for the educational needs of the University, sponsors more than 350 annual scholarships and underwrites a variety of programs to reward excellent teaching and scholarship. Its annual grants also fund start-up costs of worthy programs in both academic and student life, and cover costs of special, unanticipated opportunities that would otherwise go unrealized.

"Under the leadership of President Susan Cole, MSU has evolved into the leading university in northern New Jersey," said Stahlin, a certified public accountant. "At the Foundation, we are committed to the professional management and stewardship of contributions to support the University's many worthy projects and programs that have elevated it to its regional leadership role."

As executive vice president and chief financial officer of Fleet Card Credit Services, Stahlin oversees all financial functions. He spent more than 20 years at Summit Bancorp prior to its acquisition by Fleet. He began his career in public accounting, including six years with Price Waterhouse & Co.

Stahlin is actively involved in community and professional affairs. He is a council member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and serves as a trustee of St. Charles Borromeo Parish. He is a past president of the New Jersey Society of CPAs, an organization with more than 14,000 members, and was treasurer of Girl Scouts of USA's Rolling Hills Council. He also has been honored with the Boy Scouts of America's Good Scout Award and the Girl Scouts of USA's Thanks Badge.

President, MSU Trustee honored as leaders
Montclair State President Susan A. Cole and Rose Cali, a member of the University's Board of Trustees and founder of the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center, were honored as Montclair leaders at "Montclair: A Taste of the World," a dinner gala sponsored by the Montclair Economic Development Corp.(MEDC) on Oct. 4 at the Woman's Club of Upper Montclair.

Honored were eight Montclair leaders whose civic and professional endeavors have helped to enhance the town, making it a better place to live and work. "Montclair is composed of people from every region of the world--that's a rare and wonderful thing," said Helen Mazarakis, MEDC executive director.

Other honorees included Scott and Pilar Kennedy, co-owners of Alpha Graphics; Beverly Riddick, executive of HOMECorp.; Nancy Elliott, M.D., director of the Montclair Breast Center; Ed Lebida, head coach of the Montclair High School football team; and New York Times sports columnist Harvey Araton.

"Our committee was united in admiration for the contributions these people have made to the township of Montclair through the accomplishments they have made in their respective fields," said Judith Typaldos, MEDC co-president and chair of the gala.
