Legal Permanent Resident (LPR)

The process for obtaining U.S. permanent residency, also known as green card status, is complex and time-consuming. There are a number of pathways through which a foreign national can become a Permanent Resident if they meet the legal criteria.
International Services offers advising and processing for legal permanent residency only for international tenure-track faculty who meet the legal criteria for either of the two pathways listed below.
(Individuals who are seeking assistance in applying for Permanent Residency through another pathway that is not listed below must seek the advice of an outside immigration attorney.)

• Employment-Based 1st Preference (EB-1) as Outstanding Professor or Researcher
• Employment-Based 2nd Preference (EB-2) as Special Handling of the Labor Certification Application as a University Professor (known as PERM)
