Important Information about B-1/B-2 visa status and F-2 visa status
B-1/B-2 visa (Business or Tourist visa)

The United States Citizen and Immigration Service (USCIS) has imposed regulations that limit the activities of B-1 and B-2 visa status holders. The limitations are:

  • Visitors in B-1 and B-2 status cannot enroll in University classes. If they enroll in classes while still on B-1/B-2 status, they will fall out of status immediately
  • B-1/B-2 visa holders who wish to attend University classes may apply to school and be admitted but cannot register for classes until they have received approval of a change of status to F-1 student status
  • Or they may travel to their home country and apply for the F-1 visa and return in F-1 status in time to begin classes
  • Visitors in B-1 and B-2 status may not be employed under any circumstances

All students in B-1/B-2 visa status who wish to register for classes at Montclair State University must first seek advice from International Services on appropriate procedure to follow in applying for a change of status to F-1 status. This procedure may require 2-3 months for approval; therefore, it is important to begin the process immediately. Do not register for classes before you have received the approval for a change of status to F-1 student status.

F-2 (Dependent of F-1 student) status
Legal dependents (spouse and children) of international students may enter the US as F-2 visa holders. Their stay in the US is completely dependent on that of the principal F-1 student.  The United States Citizen and Immigration Service (USCIS) has imposed regulations that limit the activities of F-2 visa status holders. The limitations are:

  • F-2 dependent spouses are not allowed to participate in full-time or part-time study in a degree program or in taking courses toward the completion of a degree program. If a F-2 dependent spouse is accepted into a full-time program of study, they must first apply for a change of status to F-1 student status before registering for classes
  • F-2 children may attend elementary and secondary school. However they cannot attend an institution of higher education like a College or University on F-2 status. They must first apply for a change of status to  F-1 student status before registering for classes
  • F-2 dependents may not be employed under any circumstances

All students in F-2 visa status who wish to register for classes at Montclair State University must first seek advice from International Services on appropriate procedure to follow in applying for a change of status to F-1 status. This procedure may require 2-3 months for approval; therefore, it is important to begin the process immediately. Do not register for classes before you have received the approval for a change of status to F-1 student status.
