Application Procedure

To apply as an undergraduate international student, applicants should follow the steps listed below. 

  • Complete the online application by visiting                                                    http://www.montclair.edu/Admissions

  • Take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam and have the scores submitted to Montclair State.   Acceptable scores are:
    • Computerized test  minimum score accepted is 213
    • iBT test (internet) minimum score is  80

    • Montclair State University’s institutional code for test reporting is 2520.  
        
  • Arrange to have your foreign credentials evaluated. This can be done by any accredited foreign credential evaluation service.   A listing of suggested evaluation services that you can use can be found at http://www.naces.org/members.htm

Estimated Expenses

International students will apply for an F-1 student visa in order to study in the United States. Immigration regulation requires that all F-1 students be registered full-time each semester. Full-time for undergraduate students is considered at least 12 credits each semester (fall and spring semester; summer is optional). International students pay out-of-state tuition at Montclair State University.

International students must have sufficient financial support must show proof of having financial resources immediately available to cover 12 months of expenses, based on the estimates outlined below. Remember that all fees may change without notice.

I-20 Application

International students will need to apply for an F-1 student visa in order to study in the United States. In order to apply for the F-1 students visa students will need the document Form I-20 - Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status. The I-20 is issued by the university and students must complete the I-20 application and submit the application to International Services with the required documents.

International students must have sufficient financial support to live and attend classes and the I-20 application contains detailed instructions on what financial documents should be submitted with the application.

The Form I-20 can only be issued if the student meets the following criteria:

  • Student must be accepted into a full-time matriculated program at Montclair State University
  • Student has submitted the I-20 application with the required documents to International Services

It is recommended that once a student submits the admission application to Undergraduate Admission office, they download the I-20 application and submit it to International Services. While the admission office is processing the admission application International Services can review the I-20 application and once the student is accepted the I-20 can be issued.

Please make sure to submit the I-20 application to International Services and not to Undergraduate Admissions office.

Visa Procedure

Once the I-20 issued the student will for a F-1 student visa at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their home country.

Appointments are required and some U.S. Embassies and Consulates require that appointments be made at least six to eight weeks in advance. Visit http://travel.state.gov/links.html to locate the embassy or consulate near you.

Transfer Students

Students currently in F-1 status transferring from another U.S. school will need to do the following:

  • Complete the online application by visiting                                                  http://www.montclair.edu/Admissions

  • Apply for Montclair State University I-20 by submitting the I-20 Application (insert link)

  • Meet with your International Student Advisor at your current school and ask them to complete the Transfer In Form (insert link).
    • Discuss the date you want to transfer to Montclair State University.
    • The date you transfer schools is called your 'release date'. The International Student Advisor will set this date in your SEVIS record. On that date, your SEVIS record will be electronically transferred to Montclair State University.
    • The date must be between the end of the semester at your current school and beginning of the next semester at Montclair State University.

  • Once your SEVIS record has been transferred to Montclair State University we will be able to issue your transfer I-20.

Points to remember:

  • As of 'release date' date, you will be considered a Montclair State University student according to Immigration.
  • If you are on Optional Practical Training (OPT), once your SEVIS record is transferred to Montclair State University your OPT ends as of the release date.
  • If you are traveling outside the U.S., you must use your Montclair State University I-20 when you re-enter the U.S.
  • While you are outside the U.S. and your F-1 visa in your passport has expired, you will need to apply for the F-1 visa with the American Embassy or Consulate in your home country.
