Trainings and Certificates

Montclair State University requires that all faculty, staff, students, and visitors who conduct research that involves human participants must complete an initial training program on the protection of human participants.

Individuals who conduct research include but are not limited to:

        • all Principal and Co-Principal Investigators
        • any individuals who are
          • individually named on a grant or contract application
          • named in any documents related to the proposed project (e.g., informed consent documents, recruitment materials)
          • permitted to obtain individually identifiable Private Health Information (PHI)

The Principal Investigator is responsible for providing training to the research team and must ensure that all members have completed the CITI Program - Basic Human Subjects Protection Course.

Click here for more information on CITI and a timeline for rolling out the new certification program.

The initial training program can be found at the CITI Program website. Detailed instructions for new users can be found here.

After completion of the training program, each member of the research team must provide a copy of the Certificate of Completion. If you need help with providing a copy of the certificate, please contact our office.

Note: If you are not affiliated with MSU (e.g., faculty member, staff member, or student), we will accept your institution's Human Participants Tutorial Certificate.
